Las Marthas is a 2014 documentary film directed by Cristina Ibarra, who follows two young women on their journey to their debut to society in 19th century-inspired gowns, hosted by the Society of Martha Washington.

Synopsis

Las Marthas is a documentary film directed by Cristina Ibarra, who follows two young women, Laurita Garza- Hovel, a prominent member of Laredo society and Rosario Reyes, a newcomer from Mexico, while on their journey to make their debut in 19th century- inspired gowns, hosted by the Society of Martha Washington. Las Marthas displays an "alternative image of the border-town life" by documenting the debutante dance where young women wear Colonial style gowns in an effort to portray early American historical figures. Through various interviews of historians, former "Marthas" and current debutantes, Ibarra tackles the question as to why these young women are embracing a tradition that is honoring a symbol of American conquest from Mexican territories.

Indonesia is in turmoil. The populace lives in poverty, while the rich flaunt their wealth. President Sukarno (Umar Kayam) is ill and may die. Meanwhile, his political concept of Nasakom (nationalism, religion, and communism) has promoted an explosive growth in the PKI. The party, which staged a coup in 1948, has been attacking and killing people throughout the country. The weakened president is also being manipulated by the party. The PKI has manufactured a story, based on the forged Gilchrist Document, that a Generals' Council is preparing for a coup should Sukarno die. Aidit (Syubah Asa), Syam, and the Communist Party leadership secretly plan to use this as an excuse for their own coup. The rank and file members of the Party accept the leadership's explanation and, with the help of "forward-thinking" soldiers and officers (mostly from the Air Force), work to gather the Party's forces. They plan to kidnap seven generals (said to be members of the Generals' Council), overtake the city, and secure Sukarno. The newly named G30S begins training. The rightist members of the Army are unaware of this upcoming coup, living happily with their families. By the time they realise that something is amiss, it is too late.

L’Hakoah (« La force » en hébreu), fut fondé à Vienne en 1909, par réaction au célèbre paragraphe aryen qui interdisait aux clubs de sport autrichiens d’intégrer des athlètes juifs et devint l’un des plus grands clubs de sport de l’Europe de l’entre deux guerres. Dans les années 30, les plus grands succès de l’Hakoah furent remportés par ses nageuses, qui dominaient la compétition nationale en Autriche. Après l’Anschluss, les Nazis ont fait fermer le club. Les nageuses réussirent à fuir le pays avant que la guerre n’éclate, grâce à une opération de sauvetage organisée par les sportifs de l’Hakoah. 65 ans plus tard, 7 membres de l’équipe féminine de natation se retrouvent dans leur ancienne piscine à Vienne, un voyage qui évoque à la fois les souvenirs de leurs jeunes années, leur féminité affirmer et qui leur permet de renouer les liens de toute une vie.
