Synopsis
Une jeune femme éduquée, Ruth Harkins, fille aînée d'une famille de montagnards, doit affronter la tutelle rigide et primaire d'un père autoritaire et brutal. Sur les conseils de sa mère et de son entourage, elle s'éloigne des Appalaches pour suivre des cours de médecine à New York. Là, elle fait la connaissance d'un jeune avocat, Paul Cameron, qui vient précisément d'inculper son père pour un meurtre commis quelques mois auparavant. Lorsque Ruth revient au village pour créer un dispensaire, en association avec le docteur Barnard, l'hostilité de son père n'a fait que croître. D'autant qu'il écope d'une peine minime grâce à la collaboration de sa fille aînée. Au cours d'une altercation au sujet des fiançailles de sa sœur, Ruth s'oppose violemment à son père et le tue accidentellement... Traduite en justice, la jeune femme est condamnée à une peine de 25 ans de prison. Des ruraux en colère tentent même de la lyncher. Paul Cameron parvient à la sauver en l'embarquant sur un planeur.Actors

Ellen Garfield refuses to marry fellow reporter Curt Devlin until he admits she is as good at her craft as any man. The two work for rival newspapers, and their ongoing efforts to better each other eventually leads to Ellen getting fired when Curt tricks her into misreporting the verdict of a murder trial. Vendeuse de cigares dans un hôtel, Molly fréquente un jeune homme fortuné. Un mariage semble s'annoncer. Molly doit être présentée à la famille. Union officer Kerry Bradford (Errol Flynn) stages a daring escape from a Confederate prison run by prison commander Vance Irby (Randolph Scott) after learning that the rebels plan to smuggle five million dollars in gold from Virginia City, Nevada (in Union territory), to Texas, from where it can be shipped to Richmond, Virginia to aid the Confederate war effort. Bradford reports to Union headquarters and is immediately sent to Virginia City to determine where the gold is being kept. On the stagecoach, he meets and falls in love with the elegant Julia Hayne (Miriam Hopkins), who unbeknownst to him is in fact a dance-hall girl—and a rebel spy! Also on the stagecoach is the legendary John Murrell (Humphrey Bogart), leader of a gang of "banditos" traveling as a gun salesman. Before he and his gang can rob the stage, Bradford gets the drop on them and they escape empty-handed.
