Synopsis
Janie Farnsworth est étudiante à la Pennington High School, un pensionnat chic pour les enfants des artistes d'Hollywood. Elle aime Charles Grant Jr., l'auteur et le producteur de la pièce de fin d'année, mais Chuck pense qu'elle n'a pas assez de talent pour avoir le rôle. Businessman Eddie Clark (Edwards) tells a reporter the story behind his conglomerate of products branded as the "Bamboo Blonde". During the Pacific War, Captain Patrick Ransom, Jr. (Wade), the pilot of a B-29 bomber is stood up by his fiancée Eileen Sawyer (Greer) on the way to meet his new crew at a New York nightclub, owned by Clark. Instead, he sees Louise Anderson (Langford), a beautiful blonde singer at the nightclub. Although engaged, he falls in love with the singer, but has to leave next day for action in the Pacific, joining an experienced bomber crew as their new pilot. The crew is reluctant to accept their new "skipper" and decide to dump him at the out-of-bounds nightclub, coming back later to find the Captain and the torch singer kissing.

Danny O'Hara, un ancien artiste de music-hall, est déçu quand sa petite-fille Kitty ne veut pas poursuivre la tradition familiale car elle considère le monde du show business trop instable. Ils travaillent tous les deux au Greenway Drugstore à New York, le lieu de ralliement de l'auteur Johnny McCloud et de sa bande d'amis. Johnny a écrit une revue et Kitty, amoureuse de Johnny, conspire avec lui pour que le script soit présenté à Ralph Hodges, un producteur de Broadway. Hodges, passionné d'astrologie, n'est pas intéressé par le travail de Johnny mais sa secrétaire, Miss Simpson, promet de trouver une manière de lui reproposer le script. Plus tard, pendant que Kitty se prépare pour son premier rendez-vous avec Johnny, Danny convainc ce dernier de faire en sorte que le producteur de radio Harry Gage entende Kitty. Alors qu'elle chante une ballade romantique à Johnny, Kitty découvre Danny et Gage qui se cachent et disparaît avant que Gage ait pu lui offrir du travail. Ce même soir, Johnny et Danny présentent leurs excuses à Kitty et Johnny lui apprend qu'il doit partir à l'armée dans deux jours.

The film follows big band leader Glenn Miller (1904–1944) (James Stewart) from his early days in the music business in 1929 through to his 1944 death when the airplane he was flying in was lost over the English Channel during World War II. Serenade tells the story of poor vineyard worker Damon Vincenti (Mario Lanza), who becomes an operatic tenor, and is involved with two women — one a high society hostess, the other a Mexican bullfighter's daughter, Juana Montes (Sara Montiel). Highly melodramatic, the film features a great deal of operatic music, all of it sung by Lanza. Of note are the Act III Monologue from Verdi's Otello and an extract from the duet "Dio Ti Giocondi" from the same opera featuring Metropolitan Opera soprano Licia Albanese. Reviewing the film in The New York Times, A.H. Weiler wrote that, "Mr. Lanza, who was never in better voice, makes this a full and sometimes impressive musical entertainment.
