The Wagons Roll at Night is a 1941 circus film directed by Ray Enright, starring Humphrey Bogart as traveling carnival owner Nick Coster, Sylvia Sidney as his girlfriend and Eddie Albert as a newcomer who falls in love with Nick's sister. The screenplay is by Fred Niblo Jr. and Barry Trivers, and the film is based on a 1936 novel by Francis Wallace, first published as a serial in The Saturday Evening Post.
This film marks the only instance to date when the story was presented using its original circus setting, as Wallace's novel was the basis for the earlier 1937 film Kid Galahad, directed by Michael Curtiz - also by Warner Bros. and also starring Humphrey Bogart - but using the boxing world as a backdrop. In 1962, United Artists produced a musical remake of the "boxing" version of Wallace's story under the same title, directed by Phil Karlson.

Nick Coster (Humphrey Bogart) est le directeur à poigne de son cirque. Un jour, un lion (Caesar) considéré comme dangereux parce qu'imprévisible s'échappe et s'enfuit au village voisin jusque dans l'épicerie de Matt Varney (Eddie Albert) qui arrive à le maîtriser. Nick, devant la popularité que Matt vient d'acquérir auprès des villageois voit tout le bénéfice qu'il peut en tirer pour son cirque. Il annonce à Flo (Sylvia Sidney) la voyante, son amie, qu'il veut proposer à Matt de venir juste saluer les spectateurs dans la cage aux lions les soirs de représentation sous la sécurité de Hoffman the Great (Sig Ruman), le dompteur attitré. Bianca, la star du trapèze du cirque Baretti, aime Tito, le clown, et subit les avances du prince héritier d'Illyria, qui se fait appeler le Comte Cassati. Le prince poursuit aussi de ses assiduités la femme d'un propriétaire terrien des environs, et tue son mari lorsque celui-ci les trouve ensemble. Rendu fou par les refus constants de Bianca, le prince la fait venir dans son hôtel particulier à l'aide d'une fausse lettre, mais elle s'en évade par la fenêtre grâce à ses talents de gymnaste. Tito vient à son aide et lors d'une lutte avec le prince le fait tomber à la mer à travers une fenêtre. D'une ressemblance étonnante avec le prince, Tito assume cette nouvelle identité pour éviter les poursuites. Comme elle croit que Tito a été tué par le prince, Bianca quitte le cirque pour assouvir sa vengeance. Lors du couronnement, elle est sur le point d'assassiner le "prince" lorsque celui-ci lui révèle sa véritable identité. Ensemble ils rejoignent alors le cirque.
