Ronald Charles Colman (9 February 1891 – 19 May 1958) was an English actor, popular during the 1930s and 1940s. He won an Academy Award for Best Actor for A Double Life (1947) and received nominations for Random Harvest (1942) and Bulldog Drummond/Condemned (1929, nominated for his work in both). Colman starred in several classic films, including A Tale of Two Cities (1935), Lost Horizon (1937), The Prisoner of Zenda (1937) and The Talk of the Town (1942).

Biography

Né Roland Charles Colman en Angleterre, à Richmond (Surrey), il fait des études à Littlehampton où il découvre le théâtre. Il souhaite faire des études d'ingénieur à Cambridge, mais la mort soudaine de son père en 1907 rend ce projet financièrement impossible.

En 1909, il rejoint le London Scottish Regiment et est ensuite parmi les premiers soldats de la Territorial Army à se battre lors de la Première Guerre mondiale. Il combat aux côtés d'autres acteurs (Claude Rains, Basil Rathbone...). Le 31 octobre 1914, à la Première bataille d'Ypres, il est gravement blessé à la cheville par un shrapnel qui le fera boiter, défaut qu'il cherchera à cacher tout au long de sa carrière. Il est démobilisé pour invalidité en 1915.

Il épouse en secondes noces l'actrice britannique Benita Hume (1938-1958), qui arrêtera sa carrière pour lui, puis, à sa mort, se remariera avec l'acteur britannique George Sanders (1959-1967). Ils ont eu une fille, Juliet Benita Colman (née en 1944), qui a publié la biographie de son père : "Ronald Colman: A Very Private Person" en 1975.
Il meurt le 19 mai 1958 à Santa Barbara (Californie) d'emphysème.
