Manimaran (M. G. Ramachandran), is a doctor living in the country of Neidhal Naadu with his sidekick Azhaga (Nagesh). He helps cure the illness of one of the rebels against the dictator (Manohar) of Neidhal Naadu. The ruler's guards arrest the rebels, along with Manimaran for helping them. Manimaran and the rebels are sold as slaves by the ruler to the nearby island called Kanni Theevu (Tamil for Virgin Islands), ruled by Sengappan. Manimaran leads the slaves, and fights for their rights.

Un baron ruiné, Philippe de Sigognac, rencontre un jour une troupe de comédiens ambulants que dirige Hérode. Attiré par celle qui tient le rôle de l'ingénue, Isabelle, et par le dynamisme et l'enthousiasme de ses compagnons, il prend la place du poète défunt de la troupe. À la mort du Matamore de la troupe, Philippe reprend son rôle et devient le capitaine Fracasse. De son côté, Isabelle aime Philippe, mais ne veut envisager aucune union ; la noblesse lui faisant défaut, elle refuse de nuire à la carrière du baron. Et un jour, le duc de Vallombreuse, séduit par Isabelle, se voit provoquer en duel par Philippe pour avoir touché à la jeune fille. Vaincu, il lance ses hommes contre Fracasse, puis enlève Isabelle. Les comédiens se jettent alors à l'assaut du château où elle est retenue prisonnière. Cette fois Vallombreuse est grièvement blessé, et le propre père du duc, accouru sur les lieux, découvre en Isabelle la fille qu'il avait eue jadis avec une actrice. Plus rien ne s'oppose désormais à l'union de Fracasse et d'Isabelle, sous le regard attendri des comédiens Hérode et Scapin.

Au XVIIIe siècle, vit Magdeleine de Maupin, une jeune fille de bonne famille que son oncle, M. de Maupin, veut marier contre son gré à un homme qu'elle n'aime pas. Mais l'impératrice Charlotte d'Autriche-Hongrie déclare la guerre à la France et elle se voit contrainte de fuir le château de son oncle situé près de la frontière déguisée en curé par ordre de son tuteur afin d'échapper aux violences qui pourraient être faite aux femmes par les soldats austro-hongrois. Alors que la maestro du château, son prétendant Oscar et son oncle sont capturés par leurs poursuivants, elle s'échappe avec sa cousine Gracieuse et gagne le couvent où son oncle lui enjoint d'aller mais elle y renonce finalement pour ne pas vivre une vie de femme esclave. Elle arrive en ville et est enrôlée de force dans l'armée qui recrute afin de combattre les Austro-Hongrois et prend le nom de Théodore. Bientôt cependant elle s'éprend du capitaine Alcibiade qui lui montre grande camaraderie. Son identité est cependant découverte par le perfide chevalier d'Albert qui s'entiche d'elle et qu'elle rencontre lors d'une escale au château de Rosette Durand, maîtresse de D'Albert et veuve d'un général auquel Alcibiade ramène les restes de son époux. Mais à la fin, Magdeleine déclarera son amour à Alcibiade.
