Shlomo, an Ethiopian boy, is placed by his Christian mother with an Ethiopian Jewish woman whose child has died. This woman, who will become his adoptive mother, is about to be airlifted from a Sudanese refugee camp to Israel during Operation Moses in 1984. His birth mother, who hopes for a better life for him, tells him “Go, live, and become,” as he leaves her to board the plane. The film tells of his growing up in Israel and how he deals with the secrets he carries: not being Jewish and having left his birth mother.

Après La Forteresse, qui décrivait l'accueil des demandeurs d’asile en Suisse, Fernand Melgar porte son regard vers la fin du parcours migratoire. Au Centre de détention administrative de Frambois à Genève, des hommes sont privés de liberté dans l’attente d’un renvoi. Requérants d’asile déboutés, condamnés étrangers ayant purgé leur peine ou sans papiers, ils sont sommés de partir après, pour certains, avoir passé plusieurs années en Suisse, travaillé, payé des impôts, fondé une famille. Leur incarcération peut durer jusqu’à 18 mois. Dans ce huis clos, la tension monte au fil des jours. D’un côté des gardiens bienveillants, de l’autre des détenus vaincus par la peur et le stress. Des rapports d’amitié et de haine, de respect et de révolte se nouent jusqu’à l’annonce du renvoi vécu comme une trahison. Ceux qui refusent de partir et susceptible d'opposer une forte résistance physique sont menottés, ligotés et installés de force dans un avion pour un « vol spécial » qui se déroule la plupart du temps dans la détresse et l’humiliation.

In a village in eastern Turkey, tales of the economic success of Turks in Switzerland inspire Haydar to convince his wife Meryem that they must go. The three set off for Istanbul, Milan, and Switzerland, stowing away on a ship. At Lake Como, they pay the rest of their money to unprincipled men who abandon them at an Alpine pass before a blizzard. Father and son are separated from Meryem.

The film tells the story of Simon Calmat (Vincent Lindon), a French swimming coach who is divorcing his wife Marion (Audrey Dana). Simon tries to help a young Iraqi-Kurd immigrant, Bilal Kayani (Firat Ayverdi), whose dream is to cross the English Channel from Calais in France to the United Kingdom by any means possible to be reunited with his girlfriend Mina (Derya Ayverdi). Meanwhile, Mina's father strongly opposes Bilal's plans as he wants to marry his daughter to her cousin who owns a restaurant. After being caught with other immigrants and returned to France, Simon gives him temporary refuge at his home after the young Bilal, nicknamed "Bazda" (runner, for his athletic abilities and love of football and Manchester United in particular) registers for swimming lessons, intending to train to be able to swim across the Channel. After police search Simon's apartment, Bilal goes on a final attempt and drowns 800 meters from the English coast while hiding from the coastguard. Simon then travels to inform Mina.
