Several struggling bohemians try to survive in the Latin Quarter of Paris in the winter of 1830, hoping to one day become famous. Playwright Rodolphe (John Gilbert) and his painter roommate Marcel (Gino Corrado) have trouble with Bernard (Eugene Pouyet), the landlord, who threatens to throw them out if they do not come up with the monthly rent that night. Rodolphe reluctantly starts writing an overdue article for a journal editor to earn some money, but the editor rejects his work. With the help of their friends, musician Schaunard (George Hassell) and bookish Colline (Edward Everett Horton), they are able to raise their rent money.

A Paris, dans le Quartier latin, au début du XXe siècle. Trois amis, Rodolphe le poète, Marcel le peintre et Colline le philosophe, vivent ensemble misérablement dans une chambre de bonne. Mimi, une jeune voisine, se joint à eux. Rodolphe tombe amoureux d'elle. Bientôt, la jeune fille, malade, se plaint de la jalousie de Rodolphe. Celui-ci avoue à ses amis qu'il veut quitter Mimi car il ne peut la soigner. Ils se séparent mais Mimi revient bientôt mourir dans leur petite chambre. C'est l'adaptation de l'opéra La Bohème de Giacomo Puccini, lui-même adapté d'un roman d'Henri Murger.

The film opens in the Paris home of courtesan Violetta Valery, where sheets cover the furniture in dimly lit rooms. Creditors, appraisers, and movers are removing much of the artwork and ornate furnishings. One of them curiously wanders through the rooms, until he comes upon Violetta, bedridden and looking pallid and weak, and he stares at her with undisguised awe. She is startled to see him and follows him to see what he is doing. As she gazes down the long hallway, her delirious mind drifts back to a happier time, and via flashback we are transported to a lavish party she is hosting to celebrate her recovery from an illness. One of her guests, Count Gastone, has brought with him his friend, the young nobleman Alfredo Germont, who has long adored Violetta from afar. She becomes dizzy and retires to her bedroom to recover; he follows her and declares his love. At first Violetta rejects him, telling him love means nothing to her, but she is touched by his concern and offers him a camellia, telling him to return it when it has wilted. He promises to see her the next day.

Laurel and Hardy are a hen-pecked pair of Gypsies in 18th-century Austria. A cruel nobleman, Count Arnheim, persecutes the Gypsies, who are forced to flee, but Devilshoof, in revenge for having been lashed by the count, kidnaps his daughter, Arline (Darla Hood), and Mrs. Hardy fools Hardy into thinking she is their daughter. She soon elopes with Devilshoof, and leaves Hardy holding the baby.
