A l'armistice de la drôle de guerre, un jeune journaliste, Jean Victor, fonde un centre de rééducation "nouvelle formule" pour les jeunes délinquants. Sa méthode est basée sur la confiance qu'il fait aux jeunes placés sous sa garde. Il veut ainsi réagir contre les méthodes des maisons de correction qu'il a personnellement subies. Il pourra compter sur ses deux adjoints Malory et Ferrant, eux aussi d'anciens délinquants. Une rébellion éclate, montée par le plus dur des jeunes, Jorisse, qui compromet l'existence du « Carrefour des enfants perdus ». Les conséquences dramatiques de cette révolte, ainsi que l'arrivée du petit frère de Jorisse, La Puce, ouvrent les yeux du coupable.

Les enfants orphelins volent, se prostituent et peuvent parfois tuer. Aussi il est décidé d'organiser une rafle pour les empêcher de vivre dans la rue. Mais pour éviter qu'ils s'échappent comme à l'accoutumé, un pédagogue "moderne" (joué par Nikolaï Batalov) décide de prendre le contre-pied de leurs attentes et de les laisser libres de venir travailler avec lui dans une colonie de l'est du pays. Chien Fu (Jackie Chan), an orphan adopted by a kung fu school, is overworked as their janitor and abused by the kung fu teachers as a walking punching-bag, with the school's cook, Ah-Wu (Tino Wong), being his only sympathizer. Chien befriends an old beggar (Yuen Siu Tien) by offering him a meal and a place to stay. Unknown to Chien, the old beggar is actually Pai Cheng-Tien, one of the last surviving masters of the Snake-style of kung fu. Pai is on the run from the Eagle Claw clan, which is viciously killing off all of the rival Snake-stylng spot, but is ambushed by Eagle Claw student Su Chen and an assassin masquerading as a Christian missionary (Roy Horan), and is injured. After being abused once more, Chien later finds him, helping him recover. Pai agrees to give him more lessons, on the condition that he does not call him "sifu" ("master"), since they are friends. The real reason, however, is to keep Chien's connection with him secret from his pursuers.

The film is set Ireland in the early 1960s in the small town of Clones. Francie Brady (Eamonn Owens) is a 12-year-old boy whose imagination is fuelled by television - aliens, communists, the Atomic Age. When his mother (Aisling O'Sullivan) suffers a nervous breakdown and ultimately commits suicide, he is left in the care of his father (Stephen Rea), an emotionally distant and ill-tempered alcoholic. Francie spends most of his time with his best friend Joe Purcell (Alan Boyle) talking about "gangsters, cowboys and Indians, comic-book monsters and the early-1960s threat of nuclear annihilation." However, when Francie's growing conflict with another boy, Phillip Nugent (Andrew Fullerton), and his mother (Fiona Shaw) begins to go too far, he ends up at reform school. Here, he is molested by a priest (Milo O'Shea), and finds solace only in his fantasies about a foul-mouthed Virgin Mary (Sinéad O'Connor). He returns home to find Joe has outgrown him and befriended Phillip Nugent. Before long, his father has drunk himself to death. Faced with being left completely alone in the world, Francie loses his grip on reality and lashes out with uncontrollable brutality, which shocks his provincial hometown.

Il y fait la rencontre de Manon, la fille du docteur qui a accepté de soigner son père. Avec elle, il découvre l'existence d'un sentiment inconnu pour lui : l'amour. Il se lance alors à la recherche de celui de son père. Une fois Courge rétabli, il retourne vivre dans la forêt avec son fils. Ce dernier finit par apprendre ce qui est arrivé : Autrefois, le père Ronce s'opposait à l'amour de sa fille pour Courge. En pourchassant les amants, il est mort dans l'incendie qu'il avait lui-même provoqué. Courge et son amante ont fui dans la forêt où cette dernière est morte en accouchant de son fils. Fou de chagrin, Courge n'a jamais pu aimer l'enfant.

La vie de pauvres gosses d'un bidonville de Buenos Aires. De parents chômeurs, le vol est leur seul moyen de survie. Mais, ils agissent dans un univers hostile et dangereux : deux d'entre eux vendent une statue volée au gardien d'un cimetière qui les escroque. Ce dernier, moyennant argent, autorise, d'autre part, un couple d'adolescents amoureux à pénétrer, de nuit, dans les jardins du cimetière. Là, le garçon est battu et la fille violée par des employés. Le petit garçon Bolita, livré à lui-même, est dévoré par un cochon. Ses frères, ne le voyant pas revenir, s'en prennent au fils du directeur des pompes funèbres, censé être à l'origine de sa disparition, et finissent par le tuer.
