Deanie Ip (born 25 December 1947) is a Hong Kong singer and actress, known for supporting roles. She has won the Hong Kong Film Awards once for Best Actress and twice for Best Supporting Actress; she also won a Coppa Volpi for the Best Actress at the 68th Venice International Film Festival. Her Cantopop albums were released by Universal Music Group and several local labels. She speaks Cantonese, Dapeng dialect, Mandarin and English.

Roger Leung (Andy Lau), an unmarried middle aged Hong Kong film producer lives with Chung Chun-to (Deanie Ip), a maidservant who has worked for his family for decades. Returning home after a business trip, Roger discovers To on the floor and calls for an ambulance. At the hospital, Roger discovers that To has had a stroke but rather than ask for rehabilitation, To decides she wants to retire and asks to be put in a nursing home. While looking for a nursing home Roger discovers one nearby that is owned by his friend. He installs To there and visits her in between his production jobs. While visiting To, he tells her friends and neighbours that he is her god son in order to explain their connection.

Wah Dee (Andy Lau) is low level punk living in Mongkok with his mother Fei (Deanie Ip) and works as a motorcycle messenger and sells pirated VCDs. Wah was recently dumped by his girlfriend. Later he meets Ice Pok (Michelle Reis), a rich heiress from Shanghai, who followed her father on a business trip to Hong Kong where she solely searches for her mother who have divorced with her father during her childhood. Ice's father Po Ting Kwok (Yu Rongguang) calls the police when his daughter goes missing and suspects Wah after sending people to investigate. Unexpectedly, Ice was abducted by kidnappers and Wah bravely rescues her by himself and donates half of his liver for Ice to heal. Ice returned to Shanghai after rehabilitation and finds herself in love with Wah. On the day of her birthday, her father organises a party for her and introduce a "Prince Charming" to her. The "Prince Charming" turns out to be Wah, who is dressed handsomely in a formal outfit, as opposed to his usual casual clothing and messy hairstyle.

Wah Dee (Andy Lau) est un punk vivant dans le quartier de Mong Kok avec sa mère Fei (Deannie Yip). Il travaille comme coursier à moto et vend des CD piratés. Wah (Andy Lau) has an uninhibited romantic nature and is very optimistic. He also loves motorcycles, but he gets in to a traffic accident which damages a business of the company he works for and Wah is fired as a result. Lam-lam (Rosamund Kwan) is old-fashioned and conservative. She wants to get married with his boyfriend Michael (Michael Tao), but she overreacts and gets violent when she gets intimate with a man. Because of this, Michael broke up with her. One day, Wah met Lam-lam at a reception of her company. Having lost her love, Lam-lam was determined to make a breakthrough. Using alcohol to boost her courage, Lam-lam uses her tipsiness to seduce Wah. Wah sees his love fortune coming and the two of them hook up creating a seemingly imaginary and real bewildered night.

Hung Hei-kwun arrives in his village after a raid by government soldiers, only to find his whole village destroyed. Hung Hei-kwun quickly finds his infant son and gives him a choice between death and joining him in the rebellion. Upon leaving his village he encounters Ma Ling-yee, who is also supposed to be involved in the rebellion; he learns that Ling-yee had betrayed him and their village for the bounty on Hei-kwun's head. After an epic battle, the film skips ahead several years and arrives with Hung Hei-kwun and his now-skilled son making their way through China in order to find money for food. At this time, the film introduces "Red Bean", who is in the process of swindling a very rich man, Ma Kai-sin, out of his money. Kwun tries to leave his son in the care of his brother but is betrayed, forcing him to kill his brother. The rich man, witnessing the carnage done by Kwun, hires Hung Hei-Kwun as a bodyguard. Initially he wants Kwun to help him bully and steal from others; Kwun refuses the offer but decides to be his bodyguard instead because he and Man Ting, his son, ran out of money.

Every 18 years, the martial artists' community hold a martial arts contest to elect a new leader. Eva Palace's ruler wins the title and is tasked with eliminating the Ten Villains, who live in the Villains' Valley, a sanctuary for criminals. Yin Nam-tin (Eva Palace ruler's husband) believes that the villains are innocent and attempts to stop his wife from killing them. The couple turn against each other and Yin eventually manages to defeat his wife, but becomes paralyzed and mute. Eva accepts a girl called More as her disciple and intends to groom her as her successor. Meanwhile, the Ten Villains accept Yin's son (Fishy) as their student and plan to "nurture" him to become the greatest villain ever. 18 years later, the grown-up Fishy coincidentally meets More and falls in love with her.
