George F. Marion Sr. ((1860-07-16)July 16, 1860 – November 30, 1945(1945-11-30)) was an American stage actor and director, a film actor and director of two silent films. George F. Marion, who was born in San Francisco, California was father of writer George Marion Jr. and he died of a heart attack at the age of 85 years in Carmel, California, USA. Marion acted in 35 films between years 1915 and 1935. He is best remembered for playing the father Chris Christopherson to the Broadway production of Anna Christie of Pauline Lord (1921 Broadway) and the two film versions of Anna Christie of Blanche Sweet (1923 silent) and Greta Garbo (1930 talkie). His son George Marion, Jr. was a famous Hollywood screenwriter.

Biography

Très actif au théâtre, George F. Marion est notamment acteur et metteur en scène à Broadway entre 1899 et 1930, dans des pièces, comédies musicales et opérettes. Mentionnons les opérettes The Merry Widow de Franz Lehár (metteur en scène, 1907-1908) et Modest Suzanne de Jean Gilbert (metteur en scène, 1912), ainsi que les pièces Anna Christie d'Eugene O'Neill (acteur, 1921-1922) et L'Aiglon d'Edmond Rostand (acteur, 1927-1928).

Au cinéma, il joue dans trente-huit films américains, le premier étant un film muet sorti en 1915. Le dernier est Le Roman d'un chanteur de Richard Boleslawski (avec Lawrence Tibbett et Virginia Bruce), sorti en 1935.

Gilda Karlson (Dorothy Mackaill) is a New Orleans prostitute. Two fast-talking insurance salesmen — Wilbur Boswell and J. Addington Ganzy — help penniless socialite Mary Marsh to turn a dilapidated hotel, which was willed to her, into a thriving success. Phillips Holmes plays as the son of a barber, played by Grant Mitchell, who killed a man who had murdered his brother. Holmes, who is ashamed at being the son of a murderer, is working at a bank when his father is paroled. Although Mitchell is eager to establish a relationship with his son, Holmes wants nothing to do with his father. Feeling that people are judging him because of his father, Holmes decides to leave town and take his girl friend, played by Lucille Powers, with him. There is only one problem, Holmes needs to make some money quickly in order to marry Powers. Dwight Frye, who works at the same bank as Holmes, is also in love with Powers and figures out a way to prevent Holmes from taking her. Frye steals two thousand dollars from Holmes' drawer so that he will be accused of stealing money. When Holmes realizes that two thousand dollars is missing from his drawer he assumes his father has stolen the money as he visited him at the bank earlier in the day. This leads Holmes to confess to stealing the money to prevent his dad from going to prison. At the same time, his father confesses to stealing the money to prevent Holmes from going to prison. Powers, who suspects that Fyre has stolen the money, tricks him into confessing his crime and father and son are happily reunited.

Gene Fenmore is a suave gentleman, safely ensconced in the upper crust of society. Unbeknownst to his society acquaintances, he is also the leader of the largest mob in the city.
