Juan Torena (1898–1983) was a Filipino-born footballer and actor. After emigrating to Argentina at a young age, he became a footballer who eventually played for the Spanish club FC Barcelona. Later in his life, he went to North America where he acted in Hollywood films, appearing in both English and Spanish-language versions. He was married to the actress Natalie Moorhead.

Footballeur
Juan de Garchitorena naît à Manille aux Philippines le 24 mars 1898. Il émigre en Amérique du Nord, en Argentine et devient footballeur professionnel. Il rejoint ensuite l'Espagne et le FC Barcelone en 1916. C'est le premier cas d'un joueur avec un faux passeport dans ce qui est connu comme L'affaire Garchitorena. Lors d'un match remporté en championnat de Catalogne par le Barça face à l'Espanyol par 3 à 0, les perdants déposent un protêt car les joueurs étrangers ne pouvaient pas jouer. La Fédération catalane donne raison à l'Espanyol. Garchitorena continue à jouer avec le FC Barcelone mais uniquement des matches amicaux jusqu'à la fin de la saison. Lors de la saison 1918-1919, il joue trois matches en Coupe d'Espagne et de nombreux matches amicaux.


Acteur
À la fin de sa carrière de footballeur, il se rend à Hollywood où il se lance dans le métier d'acteur, avec une nature de séducteur, sous le nom de Juan Torena. Il joue dans 36 films dont Sombras habaneras (1929), Guérillas (1950) avec Tyrone Power et La Plage déserte (1953) avec Barbara Stanwyck. Il est aussi connu pour sa vie sentimentale mouvementée. Il se lie à Myrna Loy et épouse l'actrice Natalie Moorhead.

Il obtient la nationalité américaine en 1954.

Son neveu Luis Garchitorena obtint le prix littéraire en 1978 Zobel aux Philippines.

Juan Torena décède le 27 juin 1983 à Santa Barbara en Californie.

Chu Chu Ramirez (Ricardo Montalban), a farm laborer from Mexico who works as a grape picker in California, has recently become an American citizen and is determined to better himself. While his cousin Manuel and his friends Celestino and Willie spend their pay on gambling and women, Chu Chu buys new clothes and an encyclopedia. When grape season ends, Chu Chu takes a job clearing land for Ansel Ames (Wendell Corey) on Ames' farm near Sacramento. Ames and his wife (Claire Trevor) are having marital problems and the lonely Mrs. Ames, who initially regards Chu Chu with contempt as a "foreigner", becomes attracted to Chu Chu over time. Chu Chu is friendly and kind to her, but does not return her affections and rejects her attempt to seduce him. Instead, Chu Chu is drawn to Nancy (Shelley Winters), a troubled waitress with a drinking problem whose former husband, a test pilot, was killed in a crash. Chu Chu puts up his prized possession, a letter from President Franklin D. Roosevelt, to get money for Nancy, and asks her to be his girl, although she protests that he shouldn't waste his time on a "wino" like herself.

In April 1942 in the Philippines, an American motor torpedo boat is destroyed by Japanese planes. The survivors, among them Ensign Chuck Palmer (Tyrone Power), make their way ashore on Cebu. Their commander orders them to split up. On the eve of Columbus Day festivities in New York, the boxer Mateo Vargas is released early from a jail term he served after he struck a police officer.
