Martin M. Goldsmith est un écrivain et un scénariste américain né le 6 novembre 1913 à New York (État de New York) et mort le 24 mai 1994 à Los Angeles (Californie).

Biography

Martin Goldsmith vit sa jeunesse à New York, mais quitte l'école à l'adolescence. Il part ensuite sur les routes à travers les États-Unis. Il commence alors à écrire et vend des nouvelles à divers magazines. Au milieu des années 1930, il est au Mexique, où il écrit son premier roman, Double Jeopardy. De retour à New York, il écrit Detour, qui lui vaut de bonnes critiques.

Il déménage en 1938 à Los Angeles, écrit son troisième roman, puis vend les droits d'adaptation de Detour à Producers Releasing Corporation, une des sociétés de production de Poverty Row, à condition de pouvoir écrire lui-même le scénario. Il continuera par la suite à écrire, ce qui lui permettra de financer ses voyages.

Carol Hunnicut (Anne Archer) goes out on a blind date set up by her friend, in a hotel restaurant in Los Angeles with Michael Tarlow (J. T. Walsh), a lawyer about whom she knows very little. When Tarlow receives a message during dinner to call a client, she accompanies him to his hotel suite while he makes the call. While she is in the bathroom in the suite, the client, gangster Leo Watts (Harris Yulin), arrives in person with one of his hit men, Jack Wootton (Nigel Bennett). Watts accuses Tarlow of stealing money from him. After a fearful Tarlow admits that he did, Wootton shoots him to death. Carol witnesses Tarlow's admission that he stole the money and the murder itself from an adjacent room, but Watts and Wootton do not detect her. After they leave, she waits for almost an hour before fleeing the scene. Fearing for her life, Carol does not report the murder to the authorities.

Le succès du Saloon cause des problèmes de jalousie puis, un soir, Ed est tué par Dave Rudabaugh, cousin de l'officier que Bat a jadis abattu. Lassés par la violence perpétrée par les hommes de Regan, les notables de la ville décident de nommer Bat au poste de shérif afin de faire régner la loi.

An embittered cavalry sergeant must take over his regiment after their commanding officer is killed during an ambush. Unscrupulous newspaper photographer Jack Early (Duff) is sent to take a picture of racketeer Nick Palmer (Brian Donlevy), who doesn't like to be captured on celluloid. Palmer takes a liking to Early and asks him to frame his henchmen Colton (Tierney). Duff double-crosses Palmer and informes Colton that his boss had planned to frame him. Shortly afterward Palmer is killed by a car bomb and Duff becomes famous for taking a picture of the event. Eventually Duff is himself killed by Colton but he manages to snap a picture of his murderer in the act.
