"Smiler" Grogan (Jimmy Durante), wanted by police in a tuna factory robbery fifteen years ago and on the run from the police, careens his 1957 Ford Victoria off twisting, mountainous State Highway 74 near Palm Springs in Southern California and crashes. Five motorists stop to help him - Melville Crump (Sid Caesar), a dentist, Lennie Pike (Jonathan Winters), a furniture mover, Dingy Bell (Mickey Rooney) and Benjy Benjamin (Buddy Hackett), two friends on their way to Las Vegas, and J. Russell Finch (Milton Berle), who owns Pacific Edible Seaweed Company in Fresno. Just before he dies, Grogan tells the five about $350,000 buried in Santa Rosita State Park near the Mexican border under a mysterious "big W".

In the days before the cease-fire, a hard-luck platoon run by Lt. Peer and the cowardly Sgt. Sweatish is under continual attack and suffers heavy casualties. The only good soldier in the platoon is Cpl. Sharack, who should have been rotated off the line long ago but was kept on the front by Capt. Tombolo. The return of Cpl. Pumphrey reveals a deeper motive for the Captain's behavior - Tombolo did not try to rescue his children from a burning house and now tries to re-earn his self-respect with the lives of his men, especially Sharack whose heroism he is jealous of.

Sach is hired to take care of Gloria, a poodle, on an overseas trip to London, England. Unbeknownst to Sach, the people who hired him are actually diamond smugglers, who have hidden some diamonds under some false fur on Gloria. The rest of The Bowery Boys are jealous of Sach's job, and the large amount of money he receives as a result. The boys also believe that Sach is actually taking care of a pretty female. They decide to sneak onto the ship Sach is boarding for London, only to wind up swabbing the deck as punishment for being stowaways. Once in England, Sach and the boys soon catch on to the smugglers' scheme. Unfortunately, Inspector Herbert Saunders, one of the smartest detectives of Scotland Yards accuses the Boys of being the smugglers.

The theory is that through hypnosis, one can regress into a former life that they supposedly lived centuries ago. The boys believe that Noble is a phony until Sach manages to get himself hypnotized. Café owner Mike Clancy is told by his doctor that he needs to take a rest in the mountains due to his asthma. A crooked real estate agent sells Mike an old house that once belonged to the widow of a gangster. Mike and the Bowery Boys head out to the house, and eventually find a large pile of money hidden inside. Pretty soon, old friends of the deceased gangster who once owned the house catch wind of the Boys' discovery, and decide to rob the place. To add to this madness, the Bowery Boys find the house to be supposedly inhabited by ghosts.

The Bowery Boys have been collecting money to help a young polio victim in the neighborhood. At Mike Clancy's café, Sach is entrusted with taking the ninety dollars they collected to the bank. Sam, a new customer of Mike's, offers to give Sach a ride to the bank, but takes him instead to a phony bookie joint where, unaware that the operation is not legitimate, he loses all the money to con men Tony and Al. After Duke berates him for losing the cash, Sach tells Blinky that he would give his very soul to get even with the bookies. Seconds after Blinky leaves, Sach receives a visit from the devil, sporting a morning coat and two small horns under his hat. The devil offers Sach a deal: he will provide Sach with the name of a winning horse every day for a week in return for Sach's soul. Although scared, Sach ultimately agrees and, after signing the devil's contract, is provided with his winner of the day.

After Danny loses his job working for the New York Morning Blade. Sach and Duke decide to pay the editor a visit in order to get Danny his job back. However, the two instead agree to get a photograph of gangster Frankie Arbo for the newspaper. A spoiled child television star steals Sach and Duke's car. After retrieving the vehicle, the duo "teach the kid a lesson". Television executives, who are disgruntled by the child, are impressed by the duo who are then hired to watch after the boy. The child's uncle/manager is not happy with Sach and Duke's influence over the child so he gets the two fired and then kidnaps the boy for ransom, to cover up his stealing the boys earnings. Sach and Duke then rescue him.
