Dans une cage spacieuse du cirque du colonel Corny, l'ours acrobate Bruno se vante d'être magnifique. Il surprend une conversation du shérif au téléphone où il apprend qu'il va devoir faire équipe avec un lapin (Bugs Bunny). Bruno décide d'écarter ce rival durant la soirée.
Cock Robin (John Gilbert) is a sideshow barker in Budapest. He also participates in one of the acts; his former girlfriend Salome (Renée Adorée) dances before Herod in exchange for the head of "Jokanaan". As Jokanaan, Robin has his head seemingly chopped off and presented to the dancer on a platter, much to the delight of the audience.
Au cirque de Mickey, c'est la journée gratuite pour les orphelins, une armée de souriceaux se précipite vers le barnum. Ils sont armés de lance-pierres, affublés de ballons et de confiserie. Mickey en Monsieur Loyal annonce l'arrivée du Capitaine Donald avec ses otaries. Après le numéro de jonglage, le vaillant canard dompteur se doit de nourrier les trois otaries adultes et le petit mais ce n'est pas facile. S'ensuit un numéro de musique, une otarie adulte devant jouer mais c'est le petit qui excelle dans l'art musical. L'adulte ne souhaite pas jouer sans récompense. Après avoir piqué la panier de poissons, la petite otarie se cache dans un canon, suivie par Donald. Mickey prévient que c'est dangereux. Mais les orphelins sont de la partie, ils font sortir l'otarie, poussent Mickey dans le canon, le lèvent et allument la mèche. Mickey et Donald font alors, en avance le numéro de l'homme-canon. Mickey se retrouve sur le fil du funambule avec un baton tandis que Donald est dans le panier pendu au bout d'un crochet. Il rit de Mickey mais tombe et se retrouve à faire du vélo sur le même fil que Mickey. Les orphelins déposent de l'huile sur le fil, renvoyant Donald de l'autre côté de la corde. Les chenapans envoient un tonneau, qui se fracasse sur Mickey. Ensuite ils électrisent le fil, électrocutant Donald et Mickey. La corde se casse et les deux vaillants artistes se retrouvent à plonger dans le bassin des otaries amenées par quelques orphelins. La petite otarie lance un poisson à Donald pour le faire taire mais les otaries adultes se précipent sur lui.
Ivan Poddoubny débarque de Théodosie à Odessa où il rencontre son ami Nikita, un docker (un va-nu-pieds), à qui il confie qu'il n'est pas venu pour travailler dans leur artel mais tenter sa chance en tant que lutteur. En chemin, il rencontre Anatoli Leonidovitch Dourov dont le cirque a brûlé et qui cherche à être embauché comme pitre. Ensemble, ils arrivent au cirque du tonitruant seigneur Giuseppe Truzzi qui a beaucoup de problèmes avec sa fille Estérina qui file le parfait amour avec Orlando considéré par le directeur du cirque comme un vaurien. Ivan n'a pas de problème pour être engagé, car son gabarit et sa renommée plaident en sa faveur, mais Dourov n'est accepté que grâce au soutien du lutteur qui promet de travailler à l'œil pendant une semaine si pendant cette période le clown n'a pas de succès.
Many days after bidding the penguins goodbye, Alex has a nightmare about himself and his friends still being stranded in Africa and finding that they have all gotten old. He then wakes up from his nightmare on his birthday and the animals present him with a miniature model of New York City made out of mud. Alex suggests to his friends and the lemurs that they should go to Monte Carlo to get the penguins and the chimpanzees and fly back to New York City, which they agree to do.
Goliath, the circus strongman (Nat Pendleton, one of the Darwin football players in Horse Feathers) and the midget, Little Professor Atom (Jerry Maren) are accomplices of the bad guy John Carter (James Burke) who is trying to take over the Wilson Wonder Circus. Jeff Wilson's girlfriend, Julie Randall (Florence Rice), performs a horse act in the circus. In the animal car on the circus train, Goliath and Atom knock out Jeff Wilson (Kenny Baker) and steal $10,000, which Jeff owes Carter. But they unintentionally leave a cigar as evidence.
Crippled trapeze aerialist and former star Mike Ribble (Burt Lancaster) sees great promise in young, brash Tino Orsini (Tony Curtis). Ribble—only the sixth man to have completed the dangerous triple somersault—thinks his protégé is capable of matching the same feat but only if he gives him rigorous training. However, Orsini is distracted by the new third member of their circus act, the manipulative Lola (Gina Lollobrigida). Tensions rise as a love triangle forms.
Charlie Chan takes his wife and twelve children on an outing to a circus after receiving a free pass from one of the owners, Joe Kinney. Kinney wants Chan to find out who is sending him anonymous threatening letters. Nearly all of the circus workers are suspects, since Kinney is very unpopular. However, when Chan goes to meet him during the night's performance, he finds the man dead, seemingly killed by a rampaging gorilla who somehow escaped from his cage.
The comedy duo are working at the circus. They first appear in the Pantomime horse and then as assistants to Destructo, a strongman. The circus goes bankrupt after the Big Top is destroyed when Laurel and Hardy cause Destructo's cannonball-catching act to go wrong. The circus can't pay them their wages so Oliver is given a gorilla called Ethel and Stanley a Flea Circus as a pay off. Despite the film's title Ethel isn't a chimpanzee. She is dressed in a ballet tutu and hat. Stanley and Oliver need to find a room to stay in overnight and they go to a guest house. The landlord gives them a room but refuses to let Ethel stay. A lion named MGM after the MGM lion has escaped from the circus. Stanley and Oliver try to smuggle Ethel into their room whilst avoiding MGM. They decide to leave Ethel outside for the night and go to bed. They sleep in the same bed as in all Laurel and Hardy films. Stanley falls out of bed and decides to sleep in the spare bed. Ethel climbs in through the window and gets into bed with Oliver. Ethel steals the blanket from Oliver so he decides to use the spare bed as well as Stanley. They both begin to itch and find that the flea circus has escaped into the bed. Another guest at the house puts some music on and Ethel begins to dance. The landlord has a wife called Ethel and when Oliver tells the gorilla to stop dancing the landlord thinks his wife is in the room with Stanley and Oliver. The landlord confronts Stanley and Oliver with a pistol. At the end the gorilla gets hold of the pistol and begins to shoot, scaring everyone out of the room.
On an ocean liner, a passenger recognizes famed ballet creator Charles Coudray (James Mason), and asks him politely why one of his works has never been performed since its debut. When Coudray remains silent, the fan leaves him alone with his thoughts, leading to a flashback.
Overhearing stern Uncle Daniel describe him as a "millstone", hurt and insulted, Toby Tyler runs away from his foster home to join the circus. There he soon befriends Mr. Stubbs, the frisky chimpanzee. However, the circus isn't all fun and games. Harry Tupper, the evil candy vendor, convinces Toby that his Aunt Olive and Uncle Daniel don't love him or want him back. Devastated, Toby resigns himself to circus life, even scoring himself a much bigger role. When he discovers, with the help of Mr. Stubbs, that Harry lied to him about Aunt Olive and Uncle Daniel, who truly do love him, he departs the circus for home. On the way, Toby finds that Mr. Stubbs has followed him, and decides to take the chimp home with him, for safe keeping. Soon after though, Mr. Stubbs gets chased by a hunter's dog. The hunter, Jim Weaver, accidentally shoots Mr. Stubbs just as Harry arrives to haul Toby back to the circus.
