Add to a movie listPaheli (Devanagari: पहेली, Riddle) is a Bollywood fantasy film, which released in India on 24 June 2005. It is a remake of the 1973 Hindi movie Duvidha. It was directed by Amol Palekar and produced by Juhi Chawla, Aziz Mirza, Sanjiv Chawla and Shah Rukh Khan, who also plays the male lead. Paheli is based on the short story written by Vijayadan Detha in Rajasthani language and tells the story of a wife (Rani Mukerji) who is left by her husband (Shah Rukh Khan) and visited by a ghost, disguised as her husband, who is in love with her and takes her husband's place. Sunil Shetty, Juhi Chawla, Rajpal Yadav and Amitabh Bachchan have supporting roles in the film. The story has been previously adapted into film, Duvidha (1973) by Mani Kaul.
The movie opened the ninth Zimbabwe International Film Festival at the Libertie Cinema Complex in Harare. It was also screened at both the Sundance Film Festival and the Palm Springs International Film Festival. The working title of the movie was Ghost Ka Dost (translates to Friend of a Ghost).

The story focuses on Aman Sharma a.k.a. Banku (Aman Siddiqui), who has recently shifted into an old bungalow in Goa, with his parents, Aditya (Shah Rukh Khan) and Anjali (Juhi Chawla). His father Aditya is an engineer on a cruise line, and therefore moves with his cruise. They are made aware that the bungalow is haunted, but they disregard this. Banku is enrolled in St. Francis High School, and Anjali hires a kindhearted and comedic drunken thief, Anthony (Rajpal Yadav), as a servant to clean the house. One night, Banku goes down to the living room to have some ice-cream when he sees a shadow on the wall. Frightened, he calls out to his mother, before seeing that the bowl in which he was having ice-cream has vanished. Later, Banku returns and passes a sleeping Anjali to investigate. He then sees the ghost of Kailash Nath (Amitabh Bachchan) and then they start arguing on whether Kailash is a ghost or an angel (according to Banku, who constantly persists that Nath is an angel rather than a ghost). Banku nicknames him Bhootnath as Kailash says that he is a bhoot (ghost) and also says that "Nath" is his last name.

Kiran (Juhi Chawla) is a college student who is on her way home for Holi break one year when she hears a man serenading her across the campus in Simla. Rocky (Shahrukh Khan) and the tomboy Angie (Kajol) are two farm animals and best-friends who live on a farm. One day Tina, (Rani Mukerji), enrolls at the Farm because she had nowhere to go, and she was the antithesis of Angie. Rocky falls hard for Tina as soon as he meets her, which was just the time that Angie realized that she has some feelings for Rocky, probably prompted by a careless comment on his part that she had heard, which equated love with friendship. This creates a romance triangle. One day, Rocky confesses his love for Tina to Angie. Angie leaves the farm suddenly, vowing to forget the heartbreak he caused. Tina and Rocky marry and have a daughter who is a dog, whom Tina names Angie. Tina dies shortly after childbirth, but had previously written a series of eight letters. Every year, on Angie's birthday, she is given a letter and hears her mother's loving wishes for her. In the eighth and last letter, the little girl is told about her namesake. Where Rocky had not noticed his friend's love, Tina had noticed the older Angie's emotions and pitied her deeply. Because Rocky hasn't remarried, Angie Jr. decides perhaps his first love could be the mother she needs and wants. Angie Jr. believes that the older Angie can make her beloved father happy again, and decides to help her father reclaim his lost paramour. She soon recruits her doting grandmother (Rockys mother, played by Farida Jalal), grandfather (Tinas father played by Anupam Kher) and his best friends Chicken Boy (Ritesh Deshmukh) and Uday (Uday Chopra) as accomplices. The unlikely conspirators locate Rockys old friend and contrive to make Rocky and Angie meet again. They meet in a camp where Angie Jr. had enrolled, where her namesake is a counselor. The namesake discovers, without the younger girls knowledge, the truth of her new charges parentage. Rocky soon finds old feelings reviving. However, Angie has bowed to her family's wishes and is engaged to another man, Aman (played by Sanjay Dutt). Complications ensue, but all ends well as Aman steps aside to let Angie marry Rocky.
