Green, produced by Moore's husband John McCormick (1893–1961), and based on the musical Sally written by Guy Bolton, Clifford Grey, and adapted to film by June Mathis. The film was based on a Florenz Ziegfeld production written specifically for Marilyn Miller that opened on December 21, 1920 at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Broadway. It ran for 570 performances.

In New York City in the early 1950s, Jerry Biffle (Phil Silvers) is the star of the Blendo Soap Program. He has been invited to participate in an autograph-signing party for his new book at an important department store. Jerry meets Sally Peters (Judy Lynn), one of the department store models, and makes her part of his TV troupe. As part of his campaign to court Sally, Jerry gets Cliff Lane (Danny Scholl), the tenor of his TV company, to sing to her over the phone. When Sally and Cliff meet, they fall in love, with Biffle ignorant of the complications.

Cricket West (Garland) is a hopeful actress with a pair of vocal cords that bring down the house. Along with her eccentric aunt, she plays host to the local jockeys, whose leader is the cocky but highly skilled Timmie Donovan (Rooney). Lionel Q. Devereaux and his alluring girlfriend, Brazilian singer Carmen Navarro have been engaged for ten years. They are highly unsuccessful nightclub performers, due to Lionel's total lack of talent. They stay at an upscale hotel in New York. Kitty Bellairs (Claudia Dell), a famous flirt of her day, comes to Bath for the season. Early on in the film she declares that "in spite of her thirty or forty affairs, I've lost not a bit of my virtue." Her path is strewn with a number of conquests, including an enamored highwayman, a lord and some others who hang on her every word. A highwayman stops her coach as she is on her way to Bath and is immediately raptured by Kitty Bellairs. He trades the loot from the passengers for a kiss from Kitty who feels she should "yield" in order to protect Lord Varney's (Walter Pidgeon) life who has gallantly come to defend her honor.
