Synopsis
A priori, rien ne distingue Insia, jeune musulmane de 14 ans, des autres filles de son âge. Physiquement, elle est de taille moyenne et elle a un beau visage sympathique comme tant d’autres filles et autrement, elle va au lycée où elle suit un parcours normal et elle a des parents qui l’aiment, comme tant d’autres filles également. Sauf que Insia a une voix extraordinaire et qu’elle est incroyablement douée pour la musique. L’adolescente qu’elle est passe tout son temps libre à composer des chansons magnifiques qu’elle interprète divinement en s’accompagnant elle-même à la guitare. Et bien sûr, elle rêve d’être reconnue et applaudie par tous pour son talent. Mais, son père, un homme strict et autoritaire, ne l’entend pas de cette oreille. Pour lui, il est hors de question que sa fille chante en public. Insia finit par faire une vidéo d’elle-même en burqua chantant une ses chansons. Du jour au lendemain, elle devient une sensation mondiale.Actors

Farhan Qureshi (R.Madhavan) and Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi) are students at the Imperial College of Engineering (ICE), a highly regarded Indian engineering college. Farhan's passion is wildlife photography, but he pursues an engineering degree to appease his father. Raju chooses engineering with hopes of improving his family's financial situation, but his lack of self-confidence results in poor grades. Their third roommate and friend, Ranchodas 'Rancho' Shamaldas Chanchad (Aamir Khan), has immense interest in robotics, and invents in his spare time. Rancho regularly faces the wrath of the college's director, Dr. Viru Sahastrabuddhe (Boman Irani), known as "Virus", when he gives creative and unorthodox answers in class. He lives by the philosophy that one should pursue excellence, as when it is achieved, success follows. Virus is shown as an extremely strict person—so strict that he caused his own son's suicide by putting him under excess pressure. The star student of their class is Chatur Ramalingam (Omi Vaidya) nicknamed "Silencer", known for his incredible techniques of memorization but more notorious for his silent but malodorous flatulence in addition to his arrogant attitude. Catering for them and the other college students' needs is Man Mohan, nicknamed "Millimeter".

In Sultanpur, a picturesque village in Pakistan, villagers have gathered to watch a game of cricket between India and Pakistan on television. Among them is a pregnant woman (Meher Vij) who, after giving birth, names her daughter Shahida after Shahid Afridi, the player who had won the game for Pakistan. On an afternoon, a six-year old Shahida falls off a cliff, but is saved by an overhanging tree. She loses her ability to speak from the accident. In the small village of Champaner, (in the State of Gujarat, in western India) during the height of the British Empire in India in 1893, Captain Andrew Russell (Paul Blackthorne), the commanding officer of the Champaner cantonment, has imposed high taxes ("lagaan") on people from the local villages which they are unable to pay due to a prolonged drought. Zooni Ali Beg (Kajol) is a blind Kashmiri girl who travels without her parents for the first time with a dance to Delhi to perform in a ceremony for Republic Day. On her journey, she meets Rehan Qadri (Aamir Khan), a Casanova tour guide who flirts with her. Although her friends warn Zooni about him, she cannot resist falling in love. On her last night in Delhi, Rehan and Zooni spend the night together and end up in bed. As Zooni is leaving the next day on a train, Rehan comes in and takes her away with him. Her parents arrive in Delhi to marry them. Siddharth "Siddhu "Marathe (Aamir Khan) is a Mumbai tapori, a boxing champion.
