A stranger on horseback rides into the isolated mining town of Lago. Three gun-toting men follow him into the saloon, taunting him to fight. When they follow him to the barbershop and begin threatening him, the Stranger quickly dispatches the three with little effort. Impressed with this performance, a dwarf named Mordecai, who works in the barbershop, befriends the Stranger. A woman named Callie Travers arranges to bump into the Stranger in the street, claiming loudly it was his fault. When she slaps the cigar from his mouth while insulting him, he drags her into the livery stable and has sexual relations with her in a very rough and aggressive manner (the scene is initially depicted as a rape, but by its end, the woman has clearly given her consent, as she is portrayed as an active, and seemingly enthusiastic participant in the act). Next, the Stranger rents a room at the hotel but declines to give a name to the hotelier. That night, he dreams about a man being brutally whipped. In the morning he returns to the barbershop for a bath. Callie Travers shoots at him after he is in the tub; inexplicably, he remains uninjured.

In 1943, having expended enormous resources on recapturing escaped Allied prisoners of war (POWs), the Germans move the most determined to a new, high-security prisoner of war camp. The commandant, Luftwaffe Colonel von Luger (Hannes Messemer), tells the senior British officer, Group Captain Ramsey (James Donald), "There will be no escapes from this camp." Von Luger points out the various features of the new camp designed to prevent escape, as well as the perks the prisoners will receive as an incentive not to try. Naive country girl Lili (Leslie Caron) arrives in a provincial town in hopes of locating an old friend of her late father's, only to find that he has died. A local shopkeeper offers her employment, then tries to take advantage of her. She is rescued by a handsome, smooth-talking, womanizing carnival magician, Marc, whose stage name is Marcus the Magnificent (Jean-Pierre Aumont). Lili is infatuated with him and follows him to the carnival where, on learning that she is 16, he helps her get a job as waitress. Lili is fired on her first night when she spends her time watching the magic act instead of waiting tables. When Lili consults the magician for advice, he tells her to go back to where she came from. Homeless and heartbroken, she contemplates suicide, unaware that she is being watched by the carnival's puppeteer Paul (Mel Ferrer). He strikes up a conversation with her through his puppets — a brash red-haired boy named Carrot Top, a sly fox, Reynardo, a vain ballerina, Marguerite, and a cowardly giant, Golo. Soon a large group of carnival workers is enthralled watching Lili's interaction with the puppets, as she is seemingly unaware that there is a puppeteer behind the curtain. Afterwards, Paul and his partner Jacquot (Kurt Kasznar) offer Lili a job in the act, talking with the puppets. She accepts, and her natural manner of interacting with the puppets becomes the most valuable part of the act.

A Mexican village is periodically raided for food and supplies by Calvera (Eli Wallach) and his bandits. As he and his men ride away from their latest visit, Calvera promises to return to loot the village again. Taking what meager goods they have, the village leaders ride to a town just inside the American border hoping to barter for weapons to defend themselves. While there, they encounter Chris Adams (Yul Brynner), a veteran Cajun gunslinger. After listening to their tale, Chris suggests that the village hire gunfighters, which would be cheaper than guns and ammunition. The village men relentlessly try to convince him to be their gunman. At first he agrees only to help them find men, but later he decides to recruit six other men to help him defend the village, despite the poor pay offered.
