Une nuit, Peter, avocat de profession, se détend dans un night club Londonien. Il fait alors la rencontre d'Anna, une prostituée qu'il ramène chez son oncle chez lequel il loge. Un oncle, juge de métier, de grande réputation, et surtout très occupé alors à son bureau. A peine le couple rentré, le juge appelle, chargeant Peter de mettre la main sur un dossier important, dont il a besoin de façon urgente. Peter, de son côté légèrement accaparé ailleurs par la belle Anna, semble quant à lui un peu moins empressé... Mais voilà, qu'en cherchant le dossier Peter entrouvre une porte de placard et à l'intérieur y découvre le corp du mort d'une crise cardiaque. C'est alors qu'au sein de la maison surgit un jeune aux allures de voyou psychotique, les menaçant de son arme. Un huis clos infernal, dans lequel le couple est pris en otage, commence alors.

In their castle, a wealthy couple (Frank Wolff and Erika Remberg) watch a blue movie with their adult son, played by Paolo Turco. Later that evening at a local carnival, they spot a woman (Silvana Venturelli) who appears to be one of the performers in the film and decide to take her home with them. During the end of the 19th century, young Metello decides to start a new life after the sudden loss of his parents. He meets a young girl, Ersilia. They get married and have a son. Metello becomes involved in a political activity at work and is arrested. He then lies that he won't be involved in the activity anymore, and as a result, has to flee town. He arrives at his new destination, and meets Viola, a middle-aged school teacher. He then has an affair with her, and as a result, she gives birth to his daughter. Towards the end of the film, Metello realizes that he really belongs back home with Ersilia.

The film portrays two conflicts that take place around Flagstone, a fictional town in the American Old West: a land battle related to construction of a railroad, and a mission of vengeance against a cold-blooded killer. A struggle exists for Sweetwater, a piece of land near Flagstone containing the region's only water source. The land was bought by Brett McBain (Frank Wolff), who foresaw that the railroad would have to pass through that area to provide water for the steam locomotives. When crippled railroad tycoon Morton (Gabriele Ferzetti) learns of this, he sends his hired gun Frank (Henry Fonda) to intimidate McBain to move off the land, but Frank instead kills McBain and his three children, planting evidence to frame the bandit Cheyenne (Jason Robards). It appears the land has no owner; however, a former prostitute (Claudia Cardinale) arrives from New Orleans, revealing she is Jill McBain, Brett's new wife and the owner of the land.
