Après deux années passées sur le continent, Salvatore retourne dans sa Sicile natale. Alors qu'il rêve d'être accueilli en fils prodigue, il constate que les habitants de son village l'attendent, plutôt impatiemment, afin d'y dénouer un conflit d'ordre social. La question cruciale est celle-ci : faut-il occuper les domaines que la récente loi a expropriés et partagés et que la Mafia empêche qu'on leur distribue ? Les paysans entament une action pacifique, mais Salvatore veut aller plus loin : en labourant et semant, ils doivent provoquer une situation irréversible. Les paysans se mettent au travail, mais la Mafia les attaque à l'aube. Les carabiniers interviennent alors pour empêcher les combats. Ne s'avouant pas vaincue, la Mafia entreprend de contrôler l'affermage des carrières du voisinage. Simultanément, elle cherche à gagner à sa cause Salvatore, en l'achetant si nécessaire. Bien qu'il feigne d'accepter la négociation, Salvatore engage une campagne pour améliorer les conditions de travail dans les carrières. Un matin, Salvatore s'en prend violemment au chef local de la Mafia : celle-ci le liquide physiquement, une heure après. Le village entier, lui rendant hommage, assiste à ses funérailles.

In World War II, two American fliers, Captain Hank Wilson (Robert Redford) and Sergeant Lucky Finder (Mike Connors), are forced to bail out over Germany. They encounter Wilhelm Frick (Alec Guinness), who hides them from the authorities in his cellar. He enjoys their company so much that he does not inform them when the war ends. Instead, he maintains a masquerade to convince his "guests" that Germany is still fighting. Eventually, after seven years, the Americans escape into a peaceful West Germany and find out the truth.

In Palestine shortly before the end of the British mandate, the Haganah has learnt that a former German tank commander, General Gustav Schiller (Hans Verner), is teaching the Arabs battle tactics, but they are unable to locate him. The film is based on true events: In 1978 approximately 3000 heavily armed fighters from Katanga crossed the border to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and marched into Kolwezi, a mining centre for copper and cobalt. They took 3000 civilians as hostages. Within a few days between 90 and 280 hostages were killed. The rebels appeared to be unpredictable and are reported to have threatened to annihilate all civilians. The Congo's head of state Mobutu urged Belgium, France and the USA to help. France sent the Foreign Legion's 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment who were flown from Corsica to Kolwezi. Following their arrival they secured the perimeter in cooperation with Belgian soldiers from Zaire and then started to evacuate the civilists. Within two days more than 2000 Europeans and about 3000 African citizens were saved. The film strives to depict these events in a dramatised form, concentrating on the Europeans' plight.
