Panom Yeerum (thaï : พนม ยีรัมย์, khmer : Cha Phnom Yiram ចាភ្ំ យីរុាំ), connu en Occident sous le nom de Tony Jaa, est un acteur thaï d'arts martiaux et un chorégraphe spécialisé en Muay Boran et Taekwondo, ainsi que dans le maniement d'épées et en gymnastique.

Biography

Tony Jaa est né le 5 février 1976 dans la province de Surin (nord de la Thaïlande). Tony Jaa est un Khmer Surin (un Thaïlandais d'origine khmère) car tout le Sud, puis l'Est de la Thaïlande, dont la province de Surin, ont fait partie de l'Empire khmer du I au XIV siècle.



À 15 ans, Tony Jaa devient l'élève de Panna Rittikrai qui dirige une équipe de cascadeurs nommée Muay Thai Stunt. Jaa fait diverses apparitions dans ses films.

Il continue à travailler en tant que cascadeur, apparaissant dans le film Mortal Kombat : Destruction finale (Mortal Kombat: Annihilation). Son premier grand film, dans lequel il tient le rôle principal de Ting, fut (Ong-bak) coréalisé en 2003 avec Panna Rittikrai. Tony Jaa y effectue toutes les cascades sans assistance technique ou effets spéciaux. Ensuite, il fera un autre film dont il a le rôle principal: Tom-Yum-Goong (The Protector aux États-Unis). Il déclare avoir été influencé dès sa jeunesse par les stars chinoises de films d'actions : Bruce Lee, Jet Li et Jackie Chan, bien que son style de combat dans Ong-Bak soit fidèle à ses racines thaïlandaises.

Le talent de Tony Jaa en tant qu'artiste martial, notamment sa performance dans Ong-bak, a impressionné de nombreux spectateurs, lui acquérant un nombre croissant d'admirateurs à travers le monde. Son extrême popularité parmi les adolescents d'Amérique du Nord (mais aussi parmi toutes les tranches d'âge) qui ont vu ses démonstrations pourrait s'expliquer par la similarité entre ses mouvements et ceux des combattants de jeux d'arts martiaux. Nombre de ses mouvements semblent en effet impossible à réaliser physiquement, et ressemblent à ceux utilisés dans les jeux vidéo.

Le 28 mai 2010, il décide de se retirer dans un temple de la province de Surin et de devenir moine bouddhiste. C'est une pratique courante dans la vie des hommes thaïlandais, qui deviennent moines pour une durée variable voire indéterminée. On ne sait donc pas à l'heure actuelle quand Tony Jaa refera son apparition dans le monde du cinéma, ni même les raisons qui l'ont poussé à faire ce choix. Les rumeurs parlent d'un désaccord avec la société de production avec laquelle il aurait signé un contrat sur plusieurs années ; d'autres sur une blessure grave menaçant sa carrière. Toutefois, des rumeurs prétendent qu'il ne serait plus moine depuis le début de l'année 2011.

En mai 2012, Tony Jaa s'est marié avec sa petite amie de longue date, Piyarat Chotiwattananont. Un mariage symbolisant probablement la fin de sa période monastique.

Selon le site "Cinema Teaser", l'acteur serait impliqué dans deux projets cinématographiques. Cela pourrait bien signer un possible retour.

Il marque son grand retour au cinéma dans le film Fast and Furious 7 réalisé par James Wan aux côtés de Paul Walker et Vin Diesel.

After defeating Owen Shaw and his crew and securing amnesty for their past crimes, Dominic "Dom" Toretto, Brian O'Conner, and the rest of their team have returned to the United States to live normal lives again.
