The drama is a coming-of-age genre film, and centers on fictional Danny Winters (Jeremy Irvine), a young gay white man from Indiana, who flees the conservative countryside in the late 1960s and moves to New York City. Before leaving, he comes out to his parents, who are horrified. He leaves behind his younger sister. After reaching Greenwich Village, he is befriended by a multiracial group of young, gay and genderfluid street kids and drag queens. He meets older men Trevor (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), who soon becomes his lover and roommate, and Ed Murphy (Ron Perlman), the manager of the Mafia-owned Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in the Village. Ed colludes with corrupt policemen and exploits homeless gay youth to his own advantage. Danny gradually learns about gay culture from his new friends.

A professor, Mike Cole (Nicolas Cage) frantically searches for his son who was abducted during a Halloween parade. Next year when the parents are still looking for their son and starting to hear and see their son reaching out to them from the other world--the Professor sees his son on a passing bus, but upon chasing the bus down and gaining access, his son is not there. He disembarks and notices spray painted on a building, "pay the ghost," the phrase his son uttered before vanishing. He enters the building and finds homeless people living there. Unearthly screams of a woman are heard, and a blind homeless man calls for the others to mask their fires, explaining to Mike that the screams are heard every year before Halloween. Mike asks about the phrase, and is taken to a wall with more of the same phrases written on it. Engrossed by the wall and the homeless man, he does not notice the wall behind him shift into another world, and a demonic figure briefly appears behind him, then vanishes. The homeless man explains nothing, but quickly tells Mike to leave.

A short time after the first film, Mavis (Selena Gomez) and her fiance Johnny (Andy Samberg) are married, with the approval of her father Dracula (Adam Sandler) and the world has become aware of (and unfased by) the existence of monsters. The students of Canterlot High School prepare for the quadrennial Friendship Games sporting event held between their school team, the Wondercolts, and the Shadowbolts from Crystal Prep Academy, a prestigious school with a reputation of poor sportsmanship and a fierce competitive streak. Principal Celestia and Vice Principal Luna advise Sunset Shimmer and her friends against using Equestrian magic in the games to keep the competition fair, but Sunset, who has been studying the magic's effects in the human world, becomes concerned when her friends begin to "pony up" (magically gain pony-like ears, tails and wings) at seemingly random times. Meanwhile, Crystal Prep is attended by the human world's version of Twilight Sparkle, a school outcast who has been investigating magical activity at Canterlot High as part of an independent study application. Twilight's principal, Abacus Cinch, forces her to lend her intellectual skill in the games by threatening to revoke her application.

À la suite du la crise financière de 2008, James «Jimmy» Adams (James Lafferty) est mis à l'écart des premières lignes d'un fonds d'investissement, Alpha Managers. Après avoir répété pendant 6 ans le « mantra » de sa dernière compagnie (« Ce qu'on fait est légal, donc ce n'est pas immoral. Si c'était immoral, ce serait illégal. »), James Adams décide de décrocher un travail honnête et plus gratifiant. Après plusieurs tentatives infructueuses, Adams est embauché en tant que serveur sans qualification dans un diner : Papa's Chicken and Waffles, une chaîne de restaurants locale ouverte 24 heures sur 24 (le restaurant a été renommé dans les nouvelles versions du livre et dans le film). Le personnel de ce diner est hétéroclite : un responsable ne sachant pas concilier sa vie maritale et le milieu professionnel, des collaborateurs en majorité issus du monde carcéral, dont un cuisinier (Danny Glover) qui le surnomme sans cesse « Petit Jimmy » ou « Jimmy Jam ». Contrairement à ce qu'on pourrait penser, ce changement radical lui donnera les clés de la réussite sociale.
