Les premières présentations eurent lieu le 16 septembre 1954 à Düsseldorf (Apollo) et le 17 septembre à Berlin et Francfort.
Synopsis
En 1910, un cirque itinérant s’arrête dans une petite ville. Le directeur a pour pseudonyme Sacha Obolski. C’est le frère, disparu vingt ans auparavant, d’un fabricant de nains de jardin, Albert Oberholzer, habitant la ville. De son vrai nom Alexander Oberholzer, il est revenu pour fêter l’anniversaire de son frère. Les petits-bourgeois déconcertés font la connaissance de sa ravissante épouse Iduna, qui chante une chanson en hommage à son père, un clown célèbre. Elle fait tourner la tête aux beaux-frères qui sont d’honnêtes maris, ce qui ne manque pas de créer des conflits.Actors

In the late years of the 18th century, Felix and Peter, two journeymen, are travelling across the Spessart hills to Würzburg. Scared of the bandits that plague these parts, especially after a brief encounter with them, the two are glad to find an inn in the middle of the forest. However, it turns out that they have wandered into a den of thieves. The owners are in league with the bandits, who this very night plan to abduct Franziska, the Comtesse von Sandau, who is travelling through the forest with a group including her fiancé, Baron Sperling. Their coach is waylaid by a trap and the bandits direct them to the nearby inn. The waitress warns the journeymen of impending danger and they pass on the warning to the nobles. During the night, the brigands arrive. To escape, the Comtesse switches places with Felix and, in a man's clothes, escapes with Peter. Felix (as Comtesse), Franziska's maid and the pastor are taken to the bandits' lair. The bandits send Baron Sperling on his way to carry the demand for 20,000 Gulden to Graf Sandau, Franziska's father.

Le film s'ouvre sur la même scène à deux endroits différents : Oxford et Moscou. Deux hommes se serrent la main et vont dans des directions opposées. Tandis que l'un, Mississippi, chrétien pratiquant la Bible à la main, va à l'ouest, l'autre, René Saint-Claude, a Le Capital de Karl Marx. Une narratrice dit : "Deux amis ont décidé de changer le monde, l'un par la loi de Moïse, l'autre par la révolution mondiale". Puis l'un est mort, l'autre a empoisonné sa femme. Cependant les deux morts ont un lien.

Peter Trost est un célibataire endurci et propriétaire d'une entreprise couronnée de succès ayant pour clientèle les célibataires. Elle a inventé ainsi une machine pour tartiner les petits pains. Pour échapper à sa secrétaire Lil qui a le béguin pour lui, il va prendre des vacances. À la gare, il rencontre Robert Deinhardt, un ancien camarade d'école. Sa femme Ellinor est furieuse, parce que Robert veut se rendre à un congrès d'architecte sans elle. Elle croit que Robert va la tromper avec Mary, sa jolie secrétaire. Aussi le menace-t-elle de faire de même avec Fred Hansen, un chef d'orchestre. Robert demande à Peter de prendre deux jours sur ses vacances pour surveiller son épouse.

In the early twentieth century, after the death of her mother, the young Manuela is admitted to a boarding school for girls where the headmistress imposes a rigid discipline. Manuela projects all her affection onto Miss Elisabeth von Bernburg, the only supervisor to show her any kindness. At boarding school, at a party where alcohol flows a little freely, Manuela creates a scandal by loudly proclaiming her love for Miss von Bernburg. Her later suicide attempt prompts the headmistress to review her methods while Elisabeth von Bernburg resigns.
