C'est leur second film, trois ans après leur premier film Repas de famille.
Inspiré de leurs sketches de leurs spectacles (notamment « La Brigade des feuilles »), le film joue sur les clichés et caricatures attribués aux employés municipaux, qui se retrouvent ici confrontés à une affaire politico-financière.
Une suite est sortie en 2019, intitulée Les Municipaux, trop c'est trop.
Synopsis
Port Vendres est un port magnifique situé en Catalogne française... Magnifique et tellement français : un maire bling-bling et des employés municipaux toujours à fond ! À fond dans les acquis sociaux, à fond contre les cadences infernales, à fond... dans la déconne... celle qui fait qu'on les aime... Et si de plus ils deviennent des héros alors il n'y a plus aucune raison de ne pas s'inscrire à ce voyage dans la vraie vie.Actors

Angèle is a 40-year-old beautician who works at the title establishment in Paris. She has been an orphan from the age of eight, her father having killed her mother for suspected infidelity, and then killed himself when her infidelity was proved untrue. She picks up men to have short sex flings, but no longer believes in love, having hurt her former boyfriend, Jacques, whom she occasionally contacts out of loneliness, but who is never available at the same time as her. An unkempt younger man, Antoine, sees her at a cafe as she is being dumped by her latest fling, and falls in love with her. He stands outside the beauty shop to watch for Angèle, follows her to a café and declares his love for her, but she for once is lost for words and does not immediately return his feelings. Antoine also reveals that despite his feelings for her, he is engaged, but feels he is drifting away from his fiancée. However, despite her refusal to believe in love, Angèle gradually falls for Antoine.

The film begins with a day nearing end. Rachel, the daughter in the first family, is shown working in a nursing home. Phil, her father, is shown driving people around in his minicab. Penny, Rachel's mother, is shown working as a cashier at Safeway store alongside Maureen, the mother in the second family. When Penny leaves work, she cycles home to find her eighteen-year-old son Rory in a fight with a local boy for taking his football. Rory is a lazy, obese, ill-mannered teenager who stays home all day and doesn't work. Complications with Rory's obesity arise when after an altercation with a gang of youths playing "Piggy in the Middle", he ultimately runs out of breath, begins to hyperventilate and is hospitalised after suffering a heart attack.
