The film was released in 1998 and was declared as a 'Hit' by Box Office India, becoming the 7th highest grossing film of the year. Although Soldier was Preity Zinta's first film, Mani Ratnam's Dil Se.. ended up being released before Soldier and was thus Zinta's film debut. It was remade in Tamil as Villu by Prabhu Deva starring Vijay and Nayantara in lead roles in 2009.
Synopsis
Captain Vijay Malhotra (Pankaj Dheer) attempts to defend himself when corrupt army officials, Pratap Singh (Suresh Oberoi), Virender Sinha (Dalip Tahil), and Jaswant Dalal (Salim Ghouse), intercept a truck-load of arms and ammunition, with the help of Virender's brother, Baldev (Sharat Saxena) which they are about to sell illicitly to gangsters. Vijay Malhotra stops the trio of smugglers, but subsequently is shot to death by a mysterious man by the name of DK, who is the ringleader of the smugglers.Actors

After acquiring the possession of the company owned by Vishwanath Sharma (Anant Mahadevan) using trickery, Madan Chopra (Dalip Tahil) dismisses Vishwanath from the company to exact a revenge on the latter, leaving the Sharma household to undergo distress and illness which claims the lives of Vishwanath and his little daughter. A spell of lasting grief casts over Vishwanath's wife (Rakhee Gulzar), while his son Ajay (Shah Rukh Khan) determines to take vengeance on Madan for his family's tragedy. 15 years later, a grown-up Ajay courts Seema (Shilpa Shetty), one of Madan's two daughters, while dating Priya (Kajol), the other daughter with a false individuality named Vicky Malhotra, keeping everyone ignorant of his dual-identity. The scary part of the film starts now, when a vindictive Ajay pushes Seema from a building to death making it, to all appearances, look like a suicide while Priya, with a strong belief of Seema's death to be a murder, determines to find out the killer with the help of her friend Inspector Karan (Siddharth Ray).

Raj Malhotra (Salman Khan) and Priya (Rani Mukerji) are members of high society. They meet, get married and soon Priya gets pregnant. A voice-over by RD (Anil Kapoor) introduces the four main characters: Ranvir Singh (Saif Ali Khan) who runs a successful business he inherited from his father. His younger brother Rajiv Singh (Akshaye Khanna) who mooches off of Ranvir and is an alcoholic. Ranvir is dating an upcoming model Sonia (Bipasha Basu), while his personal assistant Sophia (Katrina Kaif) appears to be secretly in love with him. Ranvir is also involved in an intense competition with a rival horse-owner Kabir (Dilip Tahil). The film opens with a murder plot involving a car accident which Ranvir narrowly survives. When Ranvir loses money in a race because his jockey had been bribed by Kabir, Ranvir plants a bomb in the jockey's car and kills him, showing Ranvir to be a ruthless businessman.
