Strictly in the Groove is a 1942 American musical comedy film, built around musical numbers, experienced comedy acts and guest stars. The plot thread a jive-talking college student (Davies) trying to organize a swing-music show at a local resort, where the manager (Franklin Pangborn) puts up some opposition.

Compare to the similar 1945 Rockin' in the Rockies from Columbia, which Keays also directed.

Marvin Howe is hired to work on the floor of the Clover Leaf Dairy Farm in Rutledge, Vermont, but much to his employer's dismay, he spends most of his working hours practicing playing the trombone, and not doing what he is supposed to. His boss, "Pop" Turnbull - the owner of the dairy, doesn't know that he is involved with Pop's daughter, Juanita, and is negatively surprised when the couple announces their engagement one day. Another man who works at the farm, Tate Winters, is also romantically interested in Juanita, and when he finds out about the engagement he convinces Pop that Marvin should be sent away on business. So Pop make Marvin go to New York City in order to obtain a membership National Dairymen's Association for him. Tate is well aware of that Pop repeatedly has been refused such a membership in the past, mainly because Pop raises goats and not cows. This makes the task nearly impossible for Marvin to perform.

Jimmy Sutton, the publicity agent of a major Hollywood studios, is taking part in the endless search to find an actress to star in the adaptation of a best-selling novel Girl of the North. In Minnesota he discovers Trudi Hovland a schoolteacher who is perfect for the part. After he tacking her back to Los Angeles she manages to secure the role. In an effort to boost their popularity, Jimmy organises a fake romance between Trudi and another Hollywood star, Roger Maxwell. Radio producer John Guedel is panicked and dumbfounded when his popular radio show Humbug is immediately taken off the air for making fun of the legal profession. Given a deadline to produce a replacement, Gudel contacts his writer girlfriend Corey Sullivan to help him but Corey has another client, Leroy Brinker seeking a radio show for himself. The two come across a radio show put on in a small town called People Are Funny that mixes bizarre challenges to contestants with musical entertainment. Corey gets the show's producer Pinky Wilson to bring his show to Mr Guedel.
