Le film est une adaptation cinématographique de la série de jeux vidéo Tomb Raider et plus précisément de son reboot de 2013 développé par Crystal Dynamics.
Le film est aussi un reboot de la franchise au cinéma. C'est la troisième adaptation de la série, déjà adaptée dans une dilogie cinématographique avec Angelina Jolie. Alicia Vikander reprend le rôle principal de Lara Croft.
En France, il a reçu des critiques plutôt positives mais il a divisé la critique aux États-Unis. Néanmoins, à l'époque de sa sortie, le film est devenu l'adaptation cinématographique en prise de vue réelle d'un jeu vidéo la mieux reçue par la critique d'après le site Rotten Tomatoes, titre qu'il conservera un peu plus d'un an.
Le film est également bien accueilli au box-office international, remboursant son budget et terminant à la première place du box-office mondial lors de son premier week-end d'exploitation.
Une suite, pour le moment sans titre et qui sera réalisée par Ben Wheatley, est prévue pour 2021.

Mewtwo, his heart having been softened by the selfless example of the human named Ash Ketchum back in his birthland in the eastern Kanto region, has now traveled to the western region of Johto in search of a location that is unreachable by the prying eyes and harsh judgments of humans for the sake of his band of cloned Pokémon, with whose welfare Mewtwo is solely concerned. He eventually finds the perfect hideaway: a huge mountain named Mt. Quena, surrounded by steep cliffs that are practically impossible to scale, but in its top is a forest and a freshwater lake that makes for a near-utopia for all the Bug Pokémon living there. This is a perfect fit for Mewtwo's band, so thus they settle in the top of Mt. Quena and begin a new, safe life, with Mewtwo watching over as their guardian, as he feels they cannot belong in the world as they were not born in it (Interestingly enough, he seems particularly close to the Pikachu and Meowth clones, possibly reflecting how important their templates were in his change of heart).

In 2065, Earth is infested by alien life forms known as Phantoms. By physical contact Phantoms consume the Gaia spirit of living beings, killing them instantly, though a minor contact may only result in an infection. The surviving humans live in "barrier cities", areas protected by an energy shield that prevents Phantoms from entering, and are engaged in an ongoing struggle to free the planet. After being infected by a Phantom during one of her experiments, Aki Ross (Ming-Na) and her mentor, Doctor Sid (Donald Sutherland), uncover a means of defeating the Phantoms by gathering eight spirit signatures that, when joined, can negate the Phantoms. Granger, a former Special Forces soldier living in modern day Vancouver, is sent on a quest to fulfill an ancient prophecy. The film opens with Lara Croft (Angelina Jolie) in an Egyptian tomb, seeking a diamond at one end of a chamber. As she approaches she is attacked by a large robot. After an intense chase and battle, she disables it by ripping out its motivational circuits. She takes the diamond, which is revealed to be a memory card labeled "Lara's Party Mix", and inserts it into a laptop computer inside the robot, whereupon it plays music. Now it is revealed that the scene took place in a practice arena in her home, and that her assistant Bryce (Noah Taylor) programmed the robot, SIMON, to challenge her in combat.
