A group of people wish to flee the Soviet Union to escape anti-semitism and political repression, but their activities soon attract the attention of the KGB secret police. The film is based on a short story by author Uri Dan, and in turn based loosely on the events of the June 1970 "Leningrad hijack affair", in which a group of mostly Jews and two non-Jews unsuccessfully attempted to steal Soviet airplane and fly it to freedom.

De Havilland plays Laura Wynant, a wealthy former mental patient who has travelled to her country estate to recuperate. While there, she discovers that a woman has been buried alive on her property. Wynant tries to inform others of what she has found but nobody believes her, and her family begins to suspect a relapse in her mental condition. Because her hands are nearly crippled by arthritis, she is not able to dig the woman up herself. She tries to trick a local boy into assisting her by telling him she is digging for a lost bracelet but is forced to tell him the truth, resulting in a confrontation with his angry father. While going door-to-door to seek help, she encounters the buried woman's husband, who had in fact buried her after striking her on the head with a shovel and thinking her dead. Wynant is confined to home under doctor's orders and, in a fit of anger, experiences a spontaneous recovery from the arthritis in her hands. She begins to dig up the buried woman, who is still alive, but the murderous husband finds her. The authorities arrive in time and Wynant and the buried woman are rescued.

The film opens with an unnamed company installing a phone booth in the middle of a square. Later, a man takes his son to the school bus. He enters the phone booth to make a call and the door slowly closes behind him. The man realizes that the phone doesn't work, so he tries to leave only to discover that the door is stuck. He tries desperately to get it open, but nothing works. Eventually two business men come by and try to help him out, but to no avail. This gathers the attention of many passers-by who begin to congregate and watch the action. Several people (including a strong man, a repair man and a police officer) try to open the door but it remains stuck. Eventually a firefighter tries to break open the glass roof of the phone booth when the phone booth company appears. They unbolt the booth and take the booth (with the man inside it) away on their truck. The crowd cheers and gladly waves the man away. The man watches frantically as he is carted across town. He tries to scream for help from people, but everyone just smiles and waves. Eventually the truck stops next to another truck also carrying a man stuck in a phone booth. The two men try to communicate but cannot. After many hours the truck arrives at a massive underground warehouse. The phone booth is lifted up in the air by a giant magnet and the truck drives away. The phone booth is carried by a forklift through the warehouse, which is full of phone booths containing mummified remains of other trapped citizens. The man struggles in fear but cannot escape. The forklift drops him and leaves. The man looks to his right and sees the trapped man he saw on his way to the warehouse who has strangled himself with the fake telephone cord. The man collapses out of frame in despair. The film ends with the phone booth company setting up a similar booth in the same park.

Une jeune femme Peggy Heller : (Judy Geeson) est attaquée dans son appartement par un mystérieux personnage, elle ne distingue pas son visage mais remarque son bras gauche en bois. Devant rester seule une journée, à la suite d'un déplacement de son mari, Peggy voit entrer chez elle Michael Carmichael : (Peter Cushing) avec son bras en bois bien visible. Alors elle lui tire dessus avec une carabine….

Depuis la mort mystérieuse de son compagnon Peter, Eleanor est devenue amnésique. Actrice, elle ne souvient plus du tout de Peter, qu'elle croit toujours vivant, et continue sa vie à Bruges. Elle ne se rappelle plus qu'elle a épousé un autre homme, George, et elle entretient une liaison avec un acteur de théâtre, Thomas, avec qui elle joue dans une pièce inspirée de la vie de Lady Godiva. Un jour, lors qu'elle se trouve aux alentours du port, devant une cabine téléphonique, Eleanor tombe nez à nez avec un homme en train de boire, avant de s'évanouir choquée. Emmenée à l'hôpital, elle retrouve une partie de sa mémoire grâce à un sérum de vérité. Quelque temps plus tard, sa vie est chamboulée lorsque l'étranger qu'elle a aperçu la contacte au téléphone et tue ses proches. Sa meilleure amie, Dorothy, est tuée à coups de couteau. Après avoir abattu son époux, le tueur cherche à supprimer tous les témoins avant de faire disparaître Eleanor. Pendant ce temps, Margaret Vervoort, la directrice du théâtre, émet bientôt une hypothèse : et si Eleanor simulait l'amnésie afin de cacher des secrets assassins ? Car elle a hérité du domaine de Peter qui vaut une fortune et elle n'en parle jamais. De son côté, Eleanor pense que son nouveau mari et son amant ont fomenté un complot contre elle afin de la rendre folle.
