A woman spy and some male agents working for the Germans during World War I land at night near the British naval base at Scapa Flow, from a U-boat. The British, led by Col. Foreman, ambush the landing party, capturing two of the men, but the woman gets away. Foreman fakes the execution of one of the spies, thus tricking the second one, Meyer, into becoming a double agent in the hopes of using him to capture his woman accomplice, whom Meyer identifies under the codename Fraulein Doktor. Fraulein Doktor is portrayed as a brilliant spy who stole a formula for a nerve gas which the Germans used to great effect against the Allies on the battlefield.

Plusieurs jeunes femmes sont incarcérées à El Castillo de la Muerte, une prison pour femmes au milieu de l'océan. Cette prison n'est pas tout à fait habituelle car elle est tenue par la directrice Thelma Diaz, une directrice sadique qui, avec le gouverneur de la région, le dénommé Santos, abusent sexuellement des prisonnières, particulièrement de l'une d'entre elles, le numéro 99, Marie. Mais un événement inattendu vient bouleverser la prison : l'État vient de nommer un nouveau ministre de la justice qui ouvre une enquête sur les décès suspects à la prison. Il décide d'envoyer sur place une jeune inspectrice, Leonie, chargée de lui faire un rapport ; celle-ci bouleverse la vie de la prison par sa gentillesse et son humanité envers les prisonnières dont Mary. Cette dernière a été jetée au cachot lorsqu'elle a voulu avertir les gardiens de la mort de l'une d'entre elles, Nathalie, décédée d'une péritonite suite à son mauvais traitement. Diaz et le gouverneur décident alors tendre un piège à Leonie... Pendant ce temps, Mary, libérée par Leonie, s'évade avec une autre captive, Rosalie, et l'amant de cette dernière. Mais ils sont aussitôt traqués dans la jungle hostile.

Angleterre, dans les années 1920. M. Barret, un notaire, doit se rendre à Brighton le plus rapidement possible pour régler une affaire de la plus haute importance. À cause d'un violent orage, leur voiture s'enlise dans un chantier et ils sont obligés de s’abriter dans un lugubre chalet tenu par Uriat et sa vieille mère, une spirite capable de parler avec les morts. Le petit hôtel ressemble à une maison hantée car l'électricité et le téléphone sont coupés. La mère d'Uriat propose à leurs invités de participer à une séance de spiritisme. Mais celle-ci prend une tournure inattendue lorsque le passé trouble des cinq voyageurs est révélé. Ils ont tous responsables de la mort de trois personnes et elles réclament désormais vengeance contre eux.
