Richard St John Harris (1 October 1930 – 25 October 2002) was an Irish actor, singer, theatrical and song producer, film director and writer. He appeared on stage and in many films, appearing as Frank Machin in This Sporting Life, and King Arthur in the 1967 film Camelot and the subsequent 1981 revival of the show. He played an aristocrat and prisoner in A Man Called Horse (1970), a gunfighter in Clint Eastwood's Western film Unforgiven (1992), Emperor Marcus Aurelius in Gladiator (2000), and Albus Dumbledore in both Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002). Harris had a top ten hit in the UK and the U.S. with his 1968 recording of Jimmy Webb's song "MacArthur Park".

Biography

Richard Harris est apparu dans Les Révoltés du Bounty (1962), Le Désert rouge (1964) sous la direction d'Antonioni au côté de Monica Vitti, Les Héros de Télémark (1965), Camelot (1967), Un homme nommé Cheval (1970) ; il joue également dans Orca et, à la fin de sa carrière, dans les deux premiers Harry Potter dans le rôle d'Albus Dumbledore. L'acteur meurt (de la maladie de Hodgkin) quelques semaines après la fin du tournage du deuxième volet de la saga.

Parmi ses autres rôles marquants, il joue aux côtés de Charlton Heston dans Major Dundee, qui est l’un des films les plus ambitieux de Sam Peckinpah ; on le voit également dans Impitoyable où il tient le rôle de English Bob, un chasseur de primes anglais dont une mémorable scène montre le passage à tabac par le shérif sadique joué par Gene Hackman. Il a interprété le rôle d'Abraham dans un télé-film et de Marc Aurèle dans le film Gladiator de Ridley Scott.

Connu en tant que play-boy et buveur, il faisait partie d'une génération turbulente d'acteurs irlandais et britanniques avec Albert Finney, Richard Burton et Peter O'Toole.

Richard Harris a publié plusieurs albums de chansons dans les années 1960 et 1970. Le plus célèbre reste A Tramp Shining en 1968, composé, arrangé et produit par Jimmy Webb. Il contient la chanson MacArthur Park.

The film is set in 90 AD and concerns Jesus Christ's last surviving disciple, John of Patmos, and his writings and visions from the Apocalypse of John. In 1815 Edmond Dantès, second mate of a French trading ship, and his friend Fernand Mondego, a representative of the shipping company, head to the isle of Elba to seek medical attention for their ailing captain. Dantès and Mondego are chased by British Dragoons who believe they are spies for the exiled Napoleon Bonaparte. Bonaparte himself comes to their aid, stating that they are not his agents. As payment for using his physician, Bonaparte asks Dantès to deliver a letter to a certain Monsieur Clarion in France. The captain dies, however, and they leave Elba. On returning to France, Dantès is reprimanded by the ship's first mate, Danglars, for disobeying orders. However, the company's boss, Morrell, commends Dantès' bravery, promoting him to captain over Danglars, who is left fuming. Mondego intercepts Dantès' fiancée, Mercédès, and tries to seduce her. When he hears of Dantès' promotion, Mondego realizes that Dantès and Mercédès would soon be married.

The series begins in 82 BC when Julius Caesar is an eighteen-year-old man. He is out in the town with his daughter Julia when news comes that Lucius Cornelius Sulla is just outside the city walls and intends to take the city with his army. Sulla lets him go but orders Pompey to kill him and bring his heart to him. Pompey follows Caesar and tells him to leave Rome, which he does. Pompey buys a swine's heart from the market and tells Sulla that the heart is Caesar's.
