Chris Joseph Columbus (born September 10, 1958) is an American film director, producer and screenwriter. Columbus is known for such movies as Gremlins (1984), The Goonies (1985), Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), Home Alone (1990) and for debut Harry Potter movie franchise by directing the first two films and producing the third in the series of eight. The last receiving a British Comedy Award for Best Comedy Film, he received an Academy Award nomination for his film The Help (2011).

Biography

Jeunesse et formation
Chris Columbus effectue ses études secondaires dans une bourgade de l'Ohio et développe son imagination créatrice en dessinant des storyboards et en réalisant de petits films de fiction en Super-8. À 21 ans, durant ses études de cinéma à la Tisch School of the Arts de New York, il vend son premier script, Jocks, l'histoire semi-autobiographique d'un jeune lycéen catholique qui tente de devenir joueur de football.


Révélation scénaristique et consécration commerciale (1984-1995)
Après avoir obtenu ses diplômes, il débute à Hollywood en écrivant la comédie dramatique de James Foley Reckless, inspiré par un séjour en usine dans l'Ohio. Il enchaîne ensuite, sous la tutelle de Steven Spielberg, trois scénarios originaux : Gremlins, Les Goonies et Le Secret de la pyramide, qui l'imposent rapidement parmi les jeunes talents les plus en vue de sa génération.

En 1987, il passe à la réalisation avec la comédie burlesque Nuit de folie, puis, en 1988, écrit et réalise Heartbreak Hotel. L'échec critique et commercial du second (qui ne sort pas en France) rend la suite plus difficile. Il travaille d'abord sur la suite du carton surprise Bonjour les vacances, d'Harold Ramis. Mais sa rencontre avec l'acteur Chevy Chase se passe mal, et il demande au scénariste-producteur John Hughes un autre projet : ce dernier lui envoie deux scripts, dont celui d'une comédie familiale, Home Alone. L'année 1990 est ainsi l'année de la réussite puisque Chris Columbus est l'heureux réalisateur de la comédie familiale intitulée Maman, j'ai raté l'avion, succès mondial qui fera de Macaulay Culkin un enfant star.

Ce film est suivi de Ta mère ou moi, comédie écrite par le réalisateur lui-même et réunissant Ally Sheedy et John Candy, mais qui ne fait guère d'étincelles, puis Maman, j'ai encore raté l'avion, toujours avec Macaulay Culkin. En 1993, il sort Madame Doubtfire, qui permet à Robin Williams d'interpréter le rôle d'un père qui se déguise en femme de ménage pour pouvoir voir ses enfants, et à Columbus de réaliser un nouveau blockbuster mondial. Il enchaîne avec Neuf mois aussi, remake du film français Neuf mois de Patrick Braoudé, réunissant Hugh Grant et Julianne Moore en parents mis dans tous leurs états par un accouchement proche.


Passage à un registre dramatique (1998-2005)
Jusqu'alors spécialisé dans la comédie familiale, Chris Columbus change donc de genre avec son sixième film, Ma meilleure ennemie, en abordant un registre plus dramatique : le parcours intimiste d'une femme qui récupère la garde des enfants de son mari, dont la première épouse est en train de mourir d'une grave maladie. Il réalise ensuite en 1999, d'après un roman d'Isaac Asimov, la fantaisie de science-fiction L'Homme bicentenaire, dans laquelle Robin Williams incarne un robot qui voudrait devenir humain en acquérant la faculté de ressentir des émotions. Ce nouvel essai dans le mélodrame ne convainc pas forcément la critique.

En 2000, on lui confie, après de nombreuses tergiversations, l'exploitation des romans à succès de J. K. Rowling Harry Potter, avec Harry Potter à l'école des sorciers, premier volet de l'adaptation cinématographique. Il réalise également le deuxième épisode, Harry Potter et la Chambre des secrets, mais ne souhaite pas continuer l'expérience, épuisé par ses trois années passées au service du jeune sorcier. Il se contente d'officier en tant que producteur sur le troisième opus, avant de s'éloigner de la franchise.

Fort de ces succès critiques et commerciaux mondiaux, il porte un projet plus personnel : il revient en effet vers le mélodrame en revisitant un succès de Broadway, la comédie musicale Rent, pour laquelle il engage toute la troupe de la création originale. Le film sort en 2005 mais reçoit des critiques mitigées.

Il produit parallèlement des divertissements populaires avec le blockbuster Les Quatre Fantastiques et la comédie d'aventures La Nuit au musée, dont le succès commercial engendre des suites.


Retour à la comédie (2009-)
Il ne revient à la réalisation et à l'écriture qu'en 2009 pour un projet mineur : une comédie pour adolescent(e)s intitulée I Love You, Beth Cooper, qui marque le plus gros échec critique de sa carrière, et échoue aussi au box-office.

L'année suivante, il tente donc de lancer une nouvelle franchise fantastique familiale :
Percy Jackson : Le Voleur de foudre divise beaucoup la critique, mais convainc suffisamment pour engranger une suite que Colombus se contente de produire. L’échec critique et commercial de Percy Jackson : La Mer des monstres déçoit le studio, qui décide de ne pas adapter les trois derniers tomes de la saga littéraire.

Columbus produit le drame La Couleur des sentiments, qui sort en 2011 et est nommé aux Oscars en 2012.

En 2015, alors que Maman, j'ai encore raté l'avion fête son 25e anniversaire, il est le réalisateur de la comédie d'action familiale Pixels. Le film est l'un des plus gros échecs critiques de sa carrière, mais il fonctionne plutôt bien commercialement.

One year after the events of the first film, and the night before their flight to Miami for Christmas, the McCallister family gathers at the Winnetka, Illinois home of Peter and Kate McCallister. Their son Kevin sees Florida as contradictory to Christmas because he thinks there are no Christmas trees in Florida. During the school Christmas pageant, Kevin's older brother Buzz humiliates him during his solo, causing Kevin to retaliate and ruin the performance. Kevin refuses to apologize for his actions and is annoyed with his family's decision to go to Florida, before going up to his third floor bedroom of the house. During the night, Peter unknowingly resets the alarm clock and causes the family to oversleep. In the confusion and rush to reach the airport on time, Kevin boards a flight bound for New York City, carrying Peter's bag containing his wallet and a large amount of cash; the family is unaware that he is missing until after they land in Miami. In New York, Kevin tours the city and convinces the staff at the Plaza Hotel into giving him a room using Peter's credit card. During a visit to Central Park, Kevin is scared by the appearance of a homeless woman tending to pigeons.

The NDR series robot "Andrew" (Robin Williams) is introduced in 2005 into the Martin family home to perform housekeeping and maintenance duties. The family's reactions range from acceptance and curiosity, to outright rejection, and deliberate vandalism by their surly older daughter, Grace (Lindze Letherman), which leads to the discovery that Andrew can both identify emotions and reciprocate in kind. When Andrew accidentally breaks a figurine belonging to "Little Miss" Amanda (Hallie Kate Eisenberg), he carves a replacement out of wood. The family is astonished by this creativity and “Sir” Richard Martin (Sam Neill) takes Andrew to his manufacturer, to inquire if all the robots are like him. The CEO of the company sees this development as a problem and wishes to scrap Andrew. Angered, Martin takes Andrew home and allows him to pursue his own development, encouraging Andrew to educate himself in the humanities.
