Roland Joffé (born 17 November 1945) is an English-French film director who is known for his Oscar nominated movies, The Killing Fields and The Mission. He began his career in television. His early television credits included episodes of Coronation Street and an adaptation of The Stars Look Down for Granada. He gained a reputation for hard-hitting political stories with the series Bill Brand and factual dramas for Play for Today.

Roland Joffé entame une carrière de réalisateur pour le cinéma en 1984, avec succès puisque son premier long métrage, La Déchirure, remporte trois Oscars. Le film est la fresque dramatique d'un Cambodge mutilé après l'invasion de Phnom Penh par les Khmers rouges, à travers l'histoire d'amitié qui va lier un journaliste américain à son assistant local.
Joffé s'impose dès lors comme un cinéaste engagé, désirant avant tout montrer la vérité. Ce même souci lui fait réaliser l'année suivante le bouleversant film Mission, peinture subtile de la conquête et de la domination portugaise et espagnole sur le Nouveau Monde au XVIII siècle. Le film, porté par Jeremy Irons dans le rôle d'un prêtre catholique et Robert De Niro en mercenaire espagnol, reçoit la Palme d'or au Festival de Cannes en 1986.
Roland Joffé aime à découvrir des univers totalement différents tout en mettant en exergue des destins d'exception. En 1991, La Cité de la joie nous fait découvrir la misère des enfants des rues de Calcutta à travers le parcours d'un chirurgien anglais parti en Inde chercher un sens à sa vie. Dans Les Amants du nouveau monde (1991), l'histoire douloureuse d'une jeune femme tombée enceinte pour l'amour d'un pasteur sert de canevas à une peinture de l'Amérique intolérante et puritaine du XVII siècle.
Le réalisateur abandonne un temps les "films historiques" — le temps de tourner Goodbye Lover (1999), thriller teinté d'humour noir — mais y revient vite avec Vatel. Là encore, Roland Joffé se penche sur la misère de l'Homme en ressuscitant la cour de Louis XIV et le plus célèbre cuisinier de l'Histoire que sa trop grande conscience professionnelle poussa jusqu'à la mort.

Roland Joffé est le fils de Marc Joffé (originaire de Riga). Son père a vécu avec Esther Garman, fille du sculpteur Jacob Epstein qui est ainsi devenu son grand-père adoptif.

Le film raconte l'histoire d'un journaliste espagnol contemporain, Robert, qui essaye de renouer des relations avec son père mourant, Manolo. Ce dernier a participé à la guerre civile espagnole. Le journaliste découvre, petit à petit, à travers son travail de recherche sur la vie de son père, que ce dernier était un ami intime de Josémaria Escriva, avec qui il a eu des relations compliquées. Manolo s'est engagé pendant la Guerre d'Espagne, et est tombé amoureux d'une jeune Hongroise, Ildiko. Celle-ci le rejette et se lie à un chef de la Milice, Oriol. Manolo devient jaloux et s'engage sur les chemins de la trahison. The film is about Janie Sawyer, an American teenager who is forced to live in Moscow because of her father's job. The film takes place in 1671. In the prelude to the Franco-Dutch War, a financially struggling Louis II de Bourbon, Prince de Condé is visited by King Louis XIV for three days of festivities at the Château de Chantilly.. The prince wants a commission as a general, and spares no expense in order to impress the king. In charge of organizing the event is François Vatel, Master of Festivities and Pleasures in the prince's household. Vatel is a man of great honor and talent, but of low birth. As the great Condé is prepared to do anything in his quest for stature, the tasks assigned to Vatel are often menial and dishonourable. While Vatel tries to sustain dignity amidst the extravaganza he is meant to orchestrate, he finds himself in love with Anne de Montausier, the king's latest lover, who returns his affections. However, due to their incompatible social standing and the rigid hierarchy of the court, continuing the liaison is clearly impossible. The movie ends with Vatel realizing that he is nothing more than a puppet in the hands of his superiors, bought and sold like a piece of property: he consequently commits suicide. Vatel throws himself on his sword because the roast was not sufficient to feed several unexpected guests, the clouds dulled the fireworks display and he lacked confidence that there would be enough fish for the morning meal. Anne de Montausier is grief-stricken upon hearing the news but she must not speak of it. In doing so, she flees the court quietly and no one ever knew about her and Vatel.

Mario and Luigi are two Italian American plumbers living in Brooklyn, New York, who are currently being driven out of business by the mafia-like Scapelli Construction Company led by Anthony Scapelli. Later, Luigi falls in love with an orphaned NYU student named Daisy, who is digging under the Brooklyn Bridge for dinosaur bones. After a date, Daisy takes Luigi back to the bridge only to witness one of Scapelli's men sabotaging it by leaving the water pipes open. Unable to fix the flooding, Luigi and Daisy rush back to his apartment where they inform Mario about the incident. In the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh during May 1973, the Cambodian national army is fighting a civil war with the Khmer Rouge, a result of the Vietnam War overspilling that country’s borders.
