Synopsis

"A Few Notes on Our Food Problem" analyse les avancés déployés par l'humain à Taïwan, en Inde, au Kenya et au Brésil pour améliorer la production agricole et tenter de réduire la faim dans le monde. James Blue et son équipe, dont c'est le premier film en couleur) plantent là leur caméra de manière poétique comme contemplatifs de l'espèce humaine et des progrès de l'agriculture. Progrès qui serviront plus tard le modèle extensif , la dérégulation accompagnée d’une intense financiarisation des matières premières de la part des superpuissances, États-Unis en tête. Il a été réalisé pour l'unité Motion Picture Service de l'Agence d'information des États-Unis pour une utilisation en dehors des États-Unis - la loi Smith-Mundt de 1948 empêchait les films de l'USIA d'être diffusés à l'échelle nationale sans une loi spéciale du Congrès. The story follows Prince Keoki Kanakoa, the Reverend Abner Hale and his wife Jerusha, who join the prince on mission to the Islands of Hawaii for the Calvinist church with the promise to make Kanakoa a minister. Upon their arrival to the islands, the ship stops in Lahaina, Maui before going on to Honolulu, Oahu where the main church has been established. There they are greeted by the aliʻi nui, Malama Kanakoa, Keoki's mother, who stops the Hales from traveling further when she demands Jerusha remain in Lahaina to teach her to write. Reverend Hale attempts to teach her of the Christian God first but she refuses until she, herself can write. Only after that will she listen to Abner's Christian teachings. As Hale learns, there is a serious difference between a destiny calling to him and the call to recognize the needs of others.

Lars von Trier prétend que le court-métrage Det perfekte menneske de Jørgen Leth sorti en 1967 est son film préféré. Dans le but de lui rendre hommage, mais d'une manière perverse, à la fois manipulatrice et créatrice, il propose à l'auteur du film original, son compatriote Jørgen Leth, de détruire et de reconstruire autrement ce court-métrage. Il défie Leth d'en tourner cinq remakes. Pour chaque projet, il lui impose de nouvelles « obstructions », consignes, restrictions, interdictions plus ou moins arbitraires, l'obligeant à repenser l'histoire, l'esthétique et les personnages de son film. Il s'ensuit à chaque épreuve un feed back entre les deux hommes où Lars von Trier, dans une sorte de position de « directeur de conscience », à la limite de l'humiliation, semble prendre à cœur de déconstruire et détruire ce que Jørgen Leth a réalisé.

The plot is loosely connected to the documental stories published in Jim Corbett's 1944 bestselling book Man-Eaters of Kumaon. Narrator of the film is Jim Corbett. In the film, Corbett, who is portrayed by Christopher Heyerdahl, is asked to kill a man-eating tiger who killed a young woman in Kumaon. Corbett arrives to Kumaon and meets with local people. The sister (Mishra Smriti) of the victim takes Corbett to the killing site. They together ambush the man-eater and Corbett kills the tiger from the machan. During this plot, the narration (by Corbett) contains stories of the history of India and the Kumaon region, as well as the efforts to save Indian tigers.
