Add to a movie listFort Saganne is a 1984 French war film directed by Alain Corneau and starring Gérard Depardieu, Philippe Noiret, Catherine Deneuve, and Sophie Marceau. Based on the 1980 novel of the same name by Louis Gardel, the film is about a soldier of humble beginnings who volunteers for service in the Sahara in 1911. After falling in love with the beautiful young daughter of the regional administrator, he is ordered to go on missions in the desert, where he engages in several successful campaigns and experiences severe loneliness. Later, while on a diplomatic mission to Paris, he has a brief affair with a journalist. Returning to Africa, he leads a gallant defense against a feared sultan and is awarded the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour. He returns to his home a national hero and marries the young girl he's not forgotten, but their happiness is interrupted by the onset of World War I.
Fort Saganne was screened out of competition at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival. At the time of its production, Fort Saganne was France's biggest-budget film. The film earned 2,157,767 admissions in France. In 1985, the film was nominated for four César Awards, for Best Actor (Gérard Depardieu), Best Cinematography (Bruno Nuytten), Best Costume Design (Corinne Jorry, Rosine Delamare), and Best Sound.
Synopsis
In 1911, a willful and determined man from peasant stock named Charles Saganne (Gérard Depardieu) enlists in the military and is assigned to the Sahara Desert under the aristocratic Colonel Dubreuilh (Philippe Noiret). Saganne attracts the attentions of Madeleine (Sophie Marceau), the daughter of the regional administrator. In the Sahara, Saganne earns the respect of the Arabs, including Amajan, an independent warrior. After several campaigns, Saganne travels to Paris on a diplomatic mission. After having an affair with a journalist in Paris, Saganne returns to Africa, where he leads a valliant defense against Sultan Omar. He is awarded the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, and marries Madeleine. The onset of World War I puts his success and happiness at risk.Actors

The film is about Artur Ludvik, alias Gerard, vice-minister of Foreign Affairs of Czechoslovakia. He realizes he is being watched and followed. One day, he is arrested and put into jail by an organisation that declares itself "above the ruling party" and put in solitary confinement for months without being told the reason why. Through brainwashing techniques, including sleep deprivation and being forced to walk back and forth all the time, he is slowly pressured into confessing imaginary crimes, including treason, and to repeat this confession in a public court. Years later, he meets his now demoted tormentor, who tries to downplay his role at that time.

Ageing court composer Marin Marais recalls his former master and un-equalled viol player, the jansenist Monsieur de Sainte Colombe. Sainte Colombe buried himself in his music after the death of his wife bringing up his two daughters on his own, and teaching them to be musicians, and playing in a consort with them for local noble audiences. His reputation reaching the court of Louis XIV, the king sent an envoy, Caignet, to request him to play at court. But Sainte Colombe sent the envoy away as well as the abbé Mathieu, and shut himself away in a cabin in his garden in order to perfect the art of viol playing.

1977. Dans la petite ville fictive de Sainte-Gudule, située dans le Nord, près de Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, l'usine de parapluies Pujol-Michonneau est dirigée par un patron réactionnaire et misogyne, Monsieur Pujol (Fabrice Luchini), qui a épousé la fille Michonneau, Suzanne (Catherine Deneuve). Cette dernière, surnommée « la potiche » par sa propre fille, supporte sans broncher le mauvais caractère, les vexations et les infidélités de son mari, notamment la relation qu’il entretient avec sa secrétaire, Nadège (Karin Viard). Pujol est excédé par le climat social exécrable qui règne dans son usine. Le député-maire communiste de la ville, Maurice Babin (Gérard Depardieu) ne se prive pas de souffler sur les braises. Un jour les ouvriers déclenchent une grève sans préavis qui débouche sur la séquestration de Pujol. Il fait une grave attaque cardiaque. Dans l'attente de son rétablissement, sa « potiche » de femme décide, à la surprise générale, de prendre la direction de l'entreprise. Et, à la surprise générale, elle s'en tire plutôt bien.
