Synopsis
Rome, août 1964 - À l’occasion des obsèques de Palmiro Togliatti, l’un des membres fondateurs du Parti communiste italien, un jeune diplômé de philosophie, un réalisateur de télévision, une homosexuelle et un exilé vénézuélien révisent leur engagement politique en mettant leurs actes en phase avec leur idéal militant.Actors

À la fin du XIX siècle, un anarchiste italien, Giulio Manieri, coupable d'avoir semé la sédition dans un village d'Ombrie, est condamné à mort. Sa peine est finalement commuée en réclusion à perpétuité. En dix ans de solitude, reclus dans sa cellule, Giulio ne cesse (re)penser la « révolution » à laquelle il a tout sacrifié. Ainsi, peut-il encore survivre, espérer... Or, dix ans plus tard, lors d'un transfert en barque, il croise, justement, une nouvelle génération de révolutionnaires, eux aussi incarcérés : il essaie de leur parler, de se faire entendre et comprendre. Mais le dialogue tourne court, car, le monde et les temps ont désormais changé. Giulio prend alors conscience de la vanité de ses idéaux et de l'inutilité de son combat ; il se laisse engloutir par les flots.

Après deux années passées sur le continent, Salvatore retourne dans sa Sicile natale. Alors qu'il rêve d'être accueilli en fils prodigue, il constate que les habitants de son village l'attendent, plutôt impatiemment, afin d'y dénouer un conflit d'ordre social. La question cruciale est celle-ci : faut-il occuper les domaines que la récente loi a expropriés et partagés et que la Mafia empêche qu'on leur distribue ? Les paysans entament une action pacifique, mais Salvatore veut aller plus loin : en labourant et semant, ils doivent provoquer une situation irréversible. Les paysans se mettent au travail, mais la Mafia les attaque à l'aube. Les carabiniers interviennent alors pour empêcher les combats. Ne s'avouant pas vaincue, la Mafia entreprend de contrôler l'affermage des carrières du voisinage. Simultanément, elle cherche à gagner à sa cause Salvatore, en l'achetant si nécessaire. Bien qu'il feigne d'accepter la négociation, Salvatore engage une campagne pour améliorer les conditions de travail dans les carrières. Un matin, Salvatore s'en prend violemment au chef local de la Mafia : celle-ci le liquide physiquement, une heure après. Le village entier, lui rendant hommage, assiste à ses funérailles.

The film follows several inhabitants of an Italian town during the end of World War II. Defeat is certain for the Germans, and the front is retreating back to Germany, leaving a path of destruction in their wake. The Germans plan to bomb several buildings in the town, and have told all the villagers to congregate in the town's church. Approximately half of the town decides to stay, and place their trust in the church. The rest of the town dresses in dark clothing, and go out to seek the Americans, who are rumored to be nearby, liberating towns as they come to them.

The story, drawn from La masseria delle allodole, the best-selling novel by Antonia Arslan, tells about the Avakian clan, an Armenian family living in Turkey and having two houses. The Avakians feel convinced that the rising tide of Turkish hostility on the horizon means little to them and will scarcely affect their day to day. The Avakians do not pay attention to the warning signs, and set about preparing for a family reunion with the impending visit of two well-to-do sons - landowner Aram, who resides in Turkey, and Assadour, a physician living in Venice. These illusions come crashing down when a Turkish military regiment crops up at the house, annihilates every male member of the family and forces the ladies to trek off into the Syrian desert, where they will be left to rot. With them goes one of the little boys of the family, who was dressed into a girl in order not to be killed. Meanwhile, a handsome Turkish officer (Moritz Bleibtreu) falls in love with Aram's daughter and makes an aggressive attempt to deliver her from certain death, even as the circumstances surrounding him attest to the astounding difficulty of doing so.

Un étudiant en droit, Giovanni, est envoyé par son père à San Gimignano, en Toscane, pour y régler une affaire d'héritage. Là, il rencontre une jeune femme, Eugenia, et en tombe éperdument amoureux. La situation paraît sans issue pour Giovanni qui nourrit à l'égard d'Enzo la plus vive estime... Lorsque la pièce de théâtre est enfin représentée, les propriétaires terriens, gênés par le contenu de celle-ci, font appel à la police pour faire cesser le spectacle. Au cours de l'échauffourée qui suit, Eugenia est grièvement blessée. Giovanni s'efforce, en compagnie d'Enzo, de la maintenir en vie en lui contant la fabuleuse histoire du joueur de flûte. Eugenia se rétablit et Giovanni, pour sa part, décide de retourner chez lui. Des années plus tard, Giovanni est devenu juge et une affaire passionnelle lui rappelle son amour d'antan. Celui-ci est ravivé par le fait qu'Eugenia lui annonce par téléphone qu'elle s'apprête, avec Enzo, à partir pour le Maghreb... Au moment de la séparation définitive, Giovanni opte pour un choix désespéré et irrévocable.
