She made her film debut in 1984's Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, before receiving critical acclaim for her role in Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989). Since then she has appeared in several notable films, including Groundhog Day (1993) and Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994). She has also starred in Green Card (1990), Short Cuts (1993), Michael (1996) and Multiplicity (1996).
As of 2013, MacDowell resides in Marina Del Rey, California.

Biography
MacDowell married rancher and fellow former model Paul Qualley in 1986. The two met while both were posing for Gap ads. The couple has a son, Justin (born 1986), and two daughters, Rainey (born 1990, named Miss Golden Globe 2012) and Sarah Margaret Qualley (born 1995), an actress. They divorced in 1999. She was married to businessman Rhett Hartzog from November 10, 2001, until their divorce in October 2004.As of 2013, MacDowell resides in Marina Del Rey, California.

Three years after abandoning his life as a stripper, Mike (Channing Tatum) is now running his own furniture business. He receives a call from Tarzan (Kevin Nash) who informs Mike that Dallas is "gone". Believing that his former boss has died, Mike drives to a hotel only to find that his friends, the remaining Kings of Tampa, are enjoying themselves at a pool party. After revealing that Dallas has bailed on them to start a new show in Macau, the Kings let Mike in on their plan: to end their careers on a high note by traveling to Myrtle Beach for a stripping convention. In the 1970s, a Jewish American businessman from Brooklyn, New York, moves his family to New Orleans, Louisiana, where his textile factory is relocated. However, life in the South gets tough as he lives beyond his means and overspends, while a big investor decides to pull out of the deal. Desperate, he takes a loan from the local mob and snaps at his wife and daughters. He sees a psychologist upon his wife's urging, but he assures him he is fine and his wife must be unduly concerned because she is a Holocaust survivor. However, after he attempts to commit suicide, his wife calls the police and they send him to a psychiatric hospital to deal with his anxiety disorder. Meanwhile, his younger daughter wins a US$500-poetry competition sponsored by the Campbell Soup Company. Eventually, she sees her father again when he has recovered from stress.

Grace Bennett is a Texas high-school student who works as a waitress with her best friend Emma Perkins to earn money for a trip to Paris after graduation. Seventeen-year-old Caroline Wexler (Kat Dennings) and her father move from the city to a small town where an industrial fire burns endlessly and everyone in her new high school seems to be permanently stoned. One of Caroline's classmates, Thurston Goldberg (Reece Thompson), quickly falls for her after they first meet at a party. Caroline, however, is attracted to her English teacher Mr. Anderson (Josh Lucas), and the two quickly begin an affair. On Halloween, Thurston and his best friends Paul (Landon Liboiron), Charles (Jesse Reid), and Craig (Calum Worthy) spend most of the day getting stoned and inhaling cleaning products which later cause Craig to have a violent seizure during health class. Afterwards, Mr. Anderson cancels his plans with Caroline in order to help the health teacher Ms. Budge (Rachel Blanchard). Mr. Anderson tells Caroline that they should probably go out with other people to avoid looking suspicious, and blows Caroline off on the phone. Feeling upset, Caroline goes out with Thurston where they end up having sex in her car. The next day, Mr. Anderson apologizes to her, but says that their relationship must be as discreet as possible. They make up and Caroline spends the night after reading Mr. Anderson's draft of his new novel. Thurston continues to try to pursue Caroline, coming to her home with cupcakes. After he is rejected at the door by Caroline's father (Ted Whittall), Thurston's mother (Andie MacDowell) insists on going over to beseech on his behalf, which leads to her and Caroline's father sharing intimate moments over drinks. Caroline eventually realizes that Mr. Anderson is deeply dysfunctional, and breaks off the relationship in favour of Thurston. In return, Mr. Anderson does everything to sabotage the budding romance, and Caroline's life descends into chaos. Meanwhile, there is a serial killer on the loose. As Caroline and Thurston's relationship develops, Mr. Anderson becomes even more unstable. He tells Thurston that he was just a cover, and on a rampage, Thurston breaks up with Caroline. Caroline leaves and goes to confront Mr. Anderson, who is on the verge of a breakdown. After Caroline leaves, he tries to shoot himself, but ends up just injuring his leg. Caroline goes to try to find Thurston and calls him while driving, leaving a message telling him to stay at the Christmas party where she will go to find him and that she loves him. In the meantime, he goes to the Christmas party, and ends up almost having sex with another girl, Jenny (Katie Boland), who's in love with him. Caroline inadvertently crashes her car into the serial killer, who dies. She is thought to be a hero and ends up getting back together with Thurston. Ms. Budge shows up at Mr. Anderson's home to tell him the serial killer is dead and takes him to the hospital to treat his injured leg.
