Synopsis
Adrien, dix-neuf ans, revient chez son père, Clément, la quarantaine. Celui-ci vit avec une jeune femme d'une vingtaine d'années, Louise, qui ambitionne de réussir à la télévision. Adrien reste quelques semaines chez eux, au cours desquelles il découvre que Louise se drogue et devient son amant. Il s'installe bientôt dans un squatt et avoue à Victor qu'il avait fui Paris après un coup.Actors

Cheung is employed to play the film-within-the-film's heroine, Irma Vep (an anagram for vampire), a burglar, who spends most of the film dressed in a tight, black, latex rubber catsuit, defending her director's odd choices to hostile crew members and journalists. As the film progresses, the plot mirrors the disorientation felt by the film's director. Ludovic, avocat de son métier, a deux filles nées de mères différentes, mais il n'en a élevé qu'une (Lise) et la considère comme sa fille unique; l'autre (Tina) vit avec sa mère (Nadine) avec qui Ludovic n'a vécu que brièvement et qui depuis, a eu d'autres hommes dans sa vie, dont un lui a fait deux autres enfants (actuellement en bas âge). Gabriel travaille dans le monde de l'édition et propose à son ami Adrien, un écrivain en panne d'inspiration, de réaliser un reportage sur sa vie pour une station régionale de France 3. Ensemble, ils partent pour Mulhouse sur les lieux de l'enfance d'Adrien. Ce dernier se confie à Gabriel sur ses difficultés financières et sur sa carrière de romancier. In 16th Century London, a pauper called Tom Canty reads to a group a children but is attacked and threatened by his cruel father John Canty to steal five shillings by suppertime or get beaten. Tom goes into the city square and steals a purse from a rich man, but drops it after bumping into another man. Thinking that Tom still has the purse, the rich man and other men chase Tom through the streets of London. Tom escapes by climbing up a wall and through a window, where he falls into a palace garden in front of King Henry VIII, who sets the guards on him. However, Tom outruns them by going to the roof of the castle and hiding in a chimney. In the grounds, Henry VIII orders for The Duke of Norfolk to be arrested during the masked ball that evening.

Gilles and Christine are attractive, sexually active teenagers from unstable homes. When they do some shop-lifting together she is arrested, but he gets away. She escapes from a mental institution and meets him at an abandoned house in the country, where a large group of rebellious teenagers are having a wild, all-night party. American rock music from the period is played prominently and has a very strong effect, especially "Me and Bobby McGee," sung by Janis Joplin. Drugs are used, mainly pot and hash. As the party is winding down, Gilles and Christine escape even deeper into the countryside, searching for a commune where artists are said to live without electricity or running water. This is Christine's idea, but Gilles reluctantly goes along. A jolting conclusion shows us that, as Assayas puts it, "Gilles' real life has now begun.
