Bhavani Prasad (Jayant) is a powerful Shakta priest at Kashi. Prasad, a devotee of the black goddess Kali and a thuggee, religiously follows a practice to murder wealthy travelers who stay in his pilgrim guesthouse and offers them as a sacrifice to Kali. Prasad's son Shankar (Iftekhar) does not agree to such practices, opposes his father and decides to leave the village with his wife and their three children: Kundan (Dilip Dhavan), Yashoda and Gopal. Prasad forcibly takes Kundan with him to follow in his footsteps and forbids him from seeing the rest of the family.

Canadian Commando Major Jamie Wilson plans an audacious Combined Operations raid on the Axis held French port of Le Clare; if destroyed the Germans would be stripped of their only dry dock capable of servicing their large battleships. Wilson's plan code named Operation Mad Dog, is to ram a destroyer packed with tons of explosives into the outer gate of the dock, while his commandos cause havoc to the docks facilities and garrison and then detonate the explosive laden destroyer. Opposed to Wilson is Royal Navy Captain Owen Franklin, whose own son was killed on Wilson's disastrous last Dieppe Raid type raid on the French coast at Le Plagé.

In 1880, a gambler in the small town of Rincon, just outside of Denver, Colorado, is caught cheating at a five-card stud poker game. Morgan leaves town, but later returns when he hears that a couple of the other players from that ill-fated game have become victims of grisly murders.

It is the middle of World War II and in the deserts of Africa, Sgt. Sullivan puts together a group of Italian-Americans into disguise as Italian soldiers in order to infiltrate a North African camp held by the Italians. After the soldiers have killed the Italians in their beds, they find a hooker living at the camp. Sullivan's commandos are to hold this camp and its weaponry until an American battalion arrives, all the while these Italian-Americans pretend to be Italian soldiers, often hosting the enemy. Cpt. Valli is a young, by-the-book officer who constantly argues with Sgt. Sullivan, who tells his superior that he has no idea what he is doing. One man on the base is an entomologist who is killed and then things get terrible.

After an armored car leaves the bank with ten-million dollars, it is attacked on route by Diabolik (John Phillip Law) who manages to steal the money and escape with his partner Eva Kant (Marisa Mell). Leaving the money in their underground hideout, Diabolik and Eva attend a press conference held by the Minister of the Interior which they disrupt by releasing laughing gas. Due to the high level of crime, the death penalty is brought back. The police cannot find Diabolik but gang leader Valmont (Adolfo Celi) suffers at their hands because of a clampdown due to Diabolik's actions. Realising things can get only worse because of Diabolik's crime spree, Valmont contacts Inspector Ginco (Michel Piccoli) and makes a bargain to catch Diabolik alive for the police. In his hideout, Diabolik decides to steal the famous Aksand emerald necklace for Eva's birthday from the Saint Just Castle. Valmont builds up an identikit picture of Eva and circulates it as a means of capturing Diabolik. Diabolik scales the walls of Saint Just Castle where he finds the police are waiting, Diabolik manages to steal the necklace by fooling the police officers with mirrors on the road and dummy decoys of himself.

A woman and two children are kidnapped by Apaches. The husband Lorne Warfield (Glenn Ford), enlists the help of his neighbor Owen Forbes (Arthur Kennedy) to find his captured family. Warfield is a former gunman trying to forget his violent past. Forbes, a decent and humane rancher, is also in love with Warfield's wife and feels guilty that he let her be captured without trying to help. An Indian trader (Dean Jagger) aids them in their quest. Along the way they are encounter Mexican bandits, Apache warriors, renegade soldiers, and a town blighted by cholera. While Warfield in his cynicism immediately recognizes malevolent motives, each encounter results in further stripping Forbes of his humanity and making him accustomed to killing. The search eventually leads them to the Apache camp where they rescue the woman and children. Safely back home, Forbes challenges Warfield (who is now unarmed, trading his gun to a storekeeper for clothing for his family) to a duel, but he refuses. Forbes shoots Warfield in the back, wounding him. Before he can finish him off, he is shot and killed by the storekeeper using Warfield's gun.

American Lieutenant Colonel Robert T. Frederick is summoned to Britain where he is authorized by Admiral Louis Mountbatten to raise a commando force comprising both American and Canadian personnel for operations in Norway. Back in the U.S. Frederick receives his American troops — all are Army convicts. When the Canadian contingent arrives they immediately cause friction with the Americans and chaos ensues. By the time Frederick manages to overcome the national differences and to mould the 1st Special Service Force into a highly trained commando force, the Allied High Command have had a change of heart and offered the Norway missions to British troops. Left without a role, Frederick manages to persuade General Mark Clark in Italy to give his men a chance to prove themselves. Clark asks Frederick for the 1st Special Service Force to reconnoitre a German garrison in an Italian town, but Frederick decides to go one better and capture the entire town. Convinced now of the ability of Frederick's men, Clark gives them the task no other Allied troops have managed to achieve — to capture Monte la Difensa. Facing severe obstacles, they drive the Germans off the stronghold, allowing the allies to continue their advance into Italy.
