Hondo Lane (John Wayne) arrives on foot at a ranch where Mrs. Angie Lowe (Geraldine Page) and her son Johnny (Lee Aaker) have been deserted by her husband for months. Part Apache, Hondo tries to avoid confrontation with war chief Vittorio (Michael Pate), but finally bails out a new, inexperienced new West Point graduate, Lieutenant McKay (Tom Irish), and old friend and Army scout, Buffalo (Ward Bond). When Hondo finally admits he had to kill Mr Lowe (Leo Gordon) in self-defense, Angie reveals her husband was a gambler, unfaithful, unkind, and only married her for her inheritance. She disagrees with Hondo's devotion to "truth", calls his desire to confess to Johnny selfish, and asks to leave with him and the remains of a wagon train heading towards his farm that looks just like hers.

Small-time actress Judy Schneider dreams of becoming a Hollywood star even as she struggles along playing a human football in a kitschy Broadway musical. One day in Central Park she bumps into Melvin, the bumbling assistant to a Look magazine photographer. Melvin is smitten with Judy and endures disapproval from her father who wants her to marry Harry Flack, the boring heir to a paper box company. He exaggerates his importance at the magazine in order to impress Judy and her family and promises to get her on the cover, using the photo shoots as an excuse to spend time with her. His charade is exposed when her picture doesn't appear on the cover and she discovers that he is just a lowly assistant. Too ashamed to face her, Melvin abandons his job and disappears into Central Park. While hiding in the Park he sees Judy's picture on the cover of Look and discovers that the editor made her a cover girl so he would see it and come out of hiding.

The film begins with scenes of life in Wyoming Territory, where new settlers join the cattle business by finding stray, unbranded cattle, called "mavericks", on public land. The narrator explains that established ranchers use the so-called "maverick law" against the settlers, while "sharp-witted men" take advantage of the resulting conflict. After this introduction, Jim Averell (Bishop) is shown exhorting settlers to elect him governor to defend them against cattle barons such as Reece Duncan (Scourby). When Averell's speech is over, the famous stage performer Kate Maxwell (O'Hara) arrives with a group of showgirls. Averell has arranged for Kate to operate both a cattle-buying business and a saloon. Duncan warns Kate that he will kill anyone caught stealing cattle on his land, and Sheriff Stan Blaine (Nicol) warns her of an impending war over the cattle business.

Marie, un jeune médecin, remplace sur l’île d’Ouessant, le vieux praticien qui prend sa retraite. Malgré les préjugés des insulaires, elle parvient à se faire accepter. Elle noue des liens d'amitié avec l'institutrice, également proche de la retraite, Germaine Leblanc. André, un ingénieur installé provisoirement sur l'île pour un chantier, tombe amoureux d'elle. D'abord réticente, elle sort avec lui, au risque de compromettre sa réputation. Il la demande en mariage, mais exige qu'elle renonce pour cela à son métier. Elle refuse d'abord, mais après la mort subite de son amie institutrice et l'enterrement de celle-ci, dans l'indifférence générale, elle comprend la vanité de vouloir servir une population indifférente, et finit par accepter. Pourtant, à la suite d'une opération réussie dans des conditions héroïques, qui auréole de gloire une femme qu'il ne peut aimer qu'effacée, André comprend qu’il ne saura l’arracher à sa vocation et il quitte l’île sans la revoir.

Le film raconte les mésaventures du soldat canadien français Tit-Coq un peu avant la Seconde Guerre mondiale et à son retour du front. Tit-Coq tient son surnom d’être d’un genre nerveux, drôle et irrespectueux. D’être un bâtard pèse lourd dans son esprit, jusqu’à ce qu’il tombe amoureux de Marie-Ange, qui lui promet de l’attendre pendant qu’il sera outre-mer sur le champ de bataille. Tit-Coq a une amoureuse qui l’attend et aussi une famille à qui il s’est attaché. Cédant aux pressions de sa famille, Marie-Ange épouse un autre homme. À son retour de guerre, la nouvelle est un coup dur pour Tit-Coq. L’aumônier militaire l’aide à reprendre pied et à recommencer à vivre en solitaire.
