Clea Helen D'etienne DuVall (born September 25, 1977) is an American actress. She is best known for her role as Sofie on the HBO television series Carnivàle (2003–05), as well as for films such as The Faculty (1998), Girl, Interrupted (1999), and The Grudge (2004). She is also known for her roles as Cora Lijek in the Academy Award–winning film Argo (2012), Audrey Hanson on NBC's Heroes (2006–07), Wendy Peyser on FX's American Horror Story: Asylum (2012–13), and Emma Borden on Lifetime's The Lizzie Borden Chronicles (2015).

Martha (Natasha Lyonne) is an overly optimistic housekeeper working at a local hotel in Fresno, California. Her sister Shannon (Judy Greer) is a sex addict that was recently forced to go into rehab after her addiction caused her to lose her job. As she now needs gainful employment, Shannon allows Martha to talk her into working at the hotel as well. However soon after she begins work Shannon accidentally kills one of the hotel's guests and convinces Martha to help her dispose of the body. This is easier said than done, as their attempts result in pet cemetery owners Ruby (Allison Tolman) and Gerald (Fred Armisen) blackmailing them for hush money. Without any other options, Martha and Shannon must now commit a series of robberies to come up with the money.

Based on the true story of Lizzie Borden, a Sunday School teacher who lived with her father Andrew, her stepmother Abby, and her older sister Emma in a small house in Fall River, Massachusetts, the film depicts a hot summer day in August 1892 in the Borden home where Lizzie comes across the grisly murder scene of her father who was brutally killed with a hatchet. After local law enforcement responds to the scene, the body of Abby Borden is discovered upstairs, also killed with an ax. As the case progresses, the evidence gathered by the authorities seems to point to Lizzie as their prime suspect. Lizzie's lawyer Andrew Jennings, however, maintains that a woman could not commit such a cruel act; arguing it is far too gruesome a crime for any woman to commit. Regardless, Lizzie is put on trial for the murders and the courtroom case makes headlines in newspapers throughout the country. Newspaper accounts state the crime to be the most infamous of the century. Eventually, the jury finds Lizzie innocent of all charges. The film ends with a fight between Emma and Lizzie, in which Lizzie asks Emma if she wanted know the truth. Lizzie then whispers inaudibly into Emma's ear while a series of flashbacks are shown in which Lizzie murders their stepmother and father. It is heavily implied that Lizzie Borden was in fact their murderer, and a visibly upset Emma leaves the room. Lizzie walks outside and hears three children jump roping to the famous nursery rhyme: "Lizzie Borden took an ax/ And gave her mother forty wacks/ And when she saw what she had done/ She gave her father forty-one." Emma is then shown leaving the house, never to return.

On November 4, 1979, Iranian activists storm the United States embassy in Tehran in retaliation for President Jimmy Carter giving the Shah asylum in the U.S. during the Iranian Revolution. More than 50 of the embassy staff are taken as hostages, but six avoid capture and hide in the home of Canadian ambassador Ken Taylor. With the escapees' situation kept secret, the U.S. State Department begins to explore options for exfiltrating them from Iran. Tony Mendez, a U.S. Central Intelligence Agency exfiltration specialist, is brought in for consultation. He criticizes the proposals, but is at a loss when asked for an alternative. While on the phone with his son, he is inspired by watching Battle for the Planet of the Apes and begins plans for creating a cover story for the escapees: that they are Canadian filmmakers who happened to be in Iran scouting exotic locations for a similar science-fiction film.

The film is based on the true story of Betty Anne Waters, a single mother who works tirelessly to free her wrongfully convicted brother, Kenny. The story unfolds in flashbacks, and the film opens with the scene of the brutal 1980 murder of Katharina Brow in Ayer, Massachusetts. In many ways, Betty Anne's life revolves around her brother, who is now in jail for the murder. Despite Kenny's knack for getting in trouble, they have always been close. Psychotherapist Claire Summers (Anne Hathaway) is called upon by her supervisor (Andre Braugher) to treat a group of five survivors of a recent plane crash; passengers Dean (Ryan Robbins), Norman (Don Thompson), Shannon (Clea DuVall), Eric (Patrick Wilson) and flight attendant Janice (Chelah Horsdal). Claire talks to Eric in the hospital, who seems unusually upbeat. When Claire holds a counselling session for the survivors (except Eric, who decided not to come), she receives different recounts, with some not even remembering certain parts of the crash. Afterwards, Claire meets up with Mr. Arkin (David Morse), who is seemingly an official from the airline to confirm which parts of their recounts are true. He however dismisses her, claiming that the crash was the pilot's fault. She then proceeds to Eric's home for a private counselling, with Eric becoming attracted to her. Claire becomes suspicious of him when he reveals personal information about her, including how he knows what type of coffee she likes and asking whether she has a sister.

The movie opens with 7 year old Cassie in her bed sleeping. She wakes up hearing a scary noise and sees something at her closet and goes to investigate. When she sees nothing she closes the door only to turn around to see a woman dressed in white holding a teddy bear. Cassie is drugged and kidnapped. When she wakes up she is in a dark basement. She screams for help for two days, but no one comes. Finally 2 days later the police arrive arrest the woman and free Cassie. The movie then flicks to 20 years later, Cassie is now attending graduate school. When she fails to hand in her thesis on time, her professor warns her she only has a month to finish it, so she takes a job as a fire look-out, a job she hopes will give her nothing else to do except finish the thesis. However, the isolation preys on her and when she discovers that her only human contact, a voice on the radio, is apparently a dead girl, she wants out. Meanwhile her best friend starts to figure that someone is using Cassie's psychological profile against her.
