John Lee Hancock, Jr. (born December 15, 1956) is an American screenwriter, film director, and producer. He is best known for directing the sports drama films The Rookie and The Blind Side.
En 1991, il fait ses débuts de réalisateur en signant son premier film Hard Time Romance. Il écrit ensuite les scénarios de deux films réalisés par Clint Eastwood : Un monde parfait (1993) et Minuit dans le jardin du bien et du mal. En 2000, il est producteur de Mon chien Skip avec Kevin Bacon et Diane Lane. Il contribue à de nombreuses productions télévisées, entre autres plusieurs épisodes de la série L.A. Doctors. Son deuxième film Rêve de champion s’inspire d'une histoire vraie. Le personnage principal dont le rêve est de devenir champion de baseball est interprété par Dennis Quaid qui va devenir son acteur fétiche. En 2003, il a réalisé Alamo avec de nouveau Dennis Quaid, Billy Bob Thornton et Jason Patric.
En 2009, il réalise le film The Blind Side, inspiré d'une histoire vraie basée sur la vie de Michael Oher.
Il réalise ensuite Dans l'ombre de Mary, qui sort en 2013. Ce film revient sur la quête de Walt Disney pour obtenir les droits de Mary Poppins auprès de la romancière Pamela L. Travers. Il s'attaque ensuite à un autre film biographique, Le Fondateur, centré sur Ray Kroc, le propriétaire de McDonald's. Le film sort fin 2016.

Il fait ses études de droit à la Baylor University Law School. Son diplôme en poche, il travaille pendant quatre ans comme avocat au cabinet Sowell and Ogg. À la fin des années 1980, il se tourne vers une carrière à la télévision et au cinéma comme assistant réalisateur. In 1961, the financially strapped author Pamela "P. L." Travers reluctantly travels from her home in London to Los Angeles to work with Walt Disney at the urging of her agent, Diarmuid Russell. Disney has pursued the film rights to her Mary Poppins stories for twenty years, having promised his daughters that he would produce a film based on them. In 2003, Michael "Big Mike" Oher (Aaron) has been living in foster care with different families in Memphis, Tennessee. Every time he is placed in a new home, he runs away. The film begins in March 1836 in the Mexican State of Coahuila y Tejas town of San Antonio de Bexar (now Downtown San Antonio in the U.S. state of Texas), site of the Alamo, where bodies of Texan defenders and Mexican attackers are strewn over the Alamo. The film then flashes back to a year earlier. Sam Houston (Dennis Quaid) attends a party where he tries to persuade people to migrate to Texas. He meets with David Crockett (Billy Bob Thornton), recently defeated for reelection to Congress. Houston explains to Crockett that as an immigrant to Texas, Crockett will receive 640 acres (2.6 km) [a square mile] of his own choosing. Crockett, with a grin, pointedly asks Houston whether this new republic is going to need a president.

The film tells the story of Jim Morris, the son of a career Navy man, who moves the family to a small Texas town. Jim is shown to be a very skilled pitcher as a youth, though his father disapproves of Jim's dream of making it to Major League Baseball. It is later mentioned that the town to which Jim's family moved, Big Lake, has never cared for baseball. Thus, he was unable to play baseball in high school. He later gets a chance when he is drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers, but he tears up his shoulder, ending his hopes of achieving his lifelong dream.
