Sidney Edmond Jocelyn Ackland, CBE (born 29 February 1928), known as Joss Ackland, is an English actor who has appeared in more than 130 film and television roles.

Biography

Ackland and his wife were married for 51 years. They had seven children and, as of May 2006, 32 grandchildren. Despite his filming taking him to far-flung locations, Ackland said they never spent a night apart. In 1963, their house in Barnes caught fire. Rosemary Ackland managed to save their five children but broke her back when jumping from the bedroom window to safety. She was told she would lose the baby she was carrying and would never walk again, but later gave birth and, after two years in Stoke Mandeville Hospital, walked again.

Their eldest son, Paul, died of a heroin overdose in 1982, aged 29. In 2000, Rosemary Ackland was diagnosed with motor neurone disease, and died 25 July 2002.

In the years since his wife's death, Ackland has read and edited her diaries and published them in 2009 under the title My Better Half and Me: A love affair that lasted fifty years.

Her mother felt she had been betrayed by this guy and also has a father who is an old rocker she believed had also failed her so she does not want her daughter to be involved in what she sees as the decadent world of rock music. In 1961, the Soviet Union launches its first ballistic missile nuclear submarine, the K-19. The ship is led by Captain Alexei Vostrikov, aided by executive officer Mikhail Polenin. Polenin, the original captain, and the crew have served together for some time but Vostrikov's appointment is alleged to have been aided by his wife's political connections. During his first inspection, Vostrikov discovers the submarine's reactor officer to be drunk and asleep on duty. Vostrikov sacks the officer and orders Polenin to request a replacement. The new reactor officer, Vadim Radtchenko, arrives direct from nuclear school having just been fresh from the naval academy, annoying Polenin who thinks Vostrikov was too punitive on the former reactor officer who was competent despite his momentary lapse of judgment. Also, during the preparation period for the sub's launch, the ship's medical officer is killed when struck by an oncoming truck, and is subsequently replaced by the command's foremost medical officer, an army officer who has graciously offered himself in the submarine's time of need, but also privately admits to Vostrikov that as an army officer he has never been out to sea and suffers from motion sickness. During the K-19's official launch, the bottle of champagne fails to break when it strikes the bow; the sailors nervously glance at each other due to this customary sign of bad luck.
