Le 21 octobre 1941, trois militants des jeunesses communistes abattent un officier allemand dans le centre de Nantes. En représailles, Hitler exige aussitôt l'exécution de cent cinquante otages français. À Paris, le général Otto von Stülpnagel tente de négocier le nombre des exécutions et demande à l'officier Ernst Jünger, par ailleurs écrivain, de noter le cours des événements. À Châteaubriant, en Loire-Atlantique, le sous-préfet Lecornu est chargé de désigner les otages qui seront fusillés au sein des prisonniers politiques internés au camp de Choisel. Parmi eux, l'adolescent Guy Môquet, 17 ans.

Au milieu des années 1970, Simon (Vincent Elbaz) et sa bande habitent le quartier populaire de Belleville dans le XXe arrondissement de Paris. Après plusieurs larcins l'ayant conduit en prison, il rencontre Mohamed Badaoui (Sami Bouajila), surnommé Casa, avec lequel il va basculer dans le grand banditisme et devenir, avec sa bande, un braqueur de banques très efficace. A documentary crew follows the events of Cody Maverick, a 17-year-old rockhopper penguin who lives in Shiverpool, Antartica with his mother Edna and his older brother Glen. A tribe of Vikings feel flustered because in every raid they find their target locations devoid of people. Cryptograf, an advisor to Viking chief Timandahaf, says that the enemies always disappear because "Fear gives them wings". Timandahaf excitedly concludes that they must find a "Champion of Fear", who can teach them to be great cowards so they can fly, making them invincible. Abel Tiffauges (Malkovich) is a simple Frenchman at the start of World War II, who loves animals and children. After a global-scale nuclear war, the majority of earth's surface has become a wasteland, with most of the world's survivors fighting over the few uncontaminated food and water supplies.
