Paliyath Jayachandrakuttan, popularly known as P. Jayachandran is a South Indian playback singer from Kerala. Jayachandran is best known for his captivating sound which gave him the title Bhava Gayakan by music fraternity of Kerala.

Biography

Jayachandran was born in 'Bhadralayam', Ravipuram, Ernakulam, and later his family moved to Irinjalakkuda. His father Ravivarma Kochaniyan Thampuran of the Cochin Royal Family was a learned musician, though not a professional singer. His mother Subhadra Kunjamma Paliyam Swarupam was also a great music lover who encouraged Jayachandran to learn the notes of Mridangam at a very young age and with her support he could attain dexterity with the Mridangam. He began to sing devotional songs in churches at the age of 8.

Jayachandran graduated from Christ College, Irinjalakuda. He was a student of the Irinjalakuda National School from where he received many prestigious prizes for playing the Mridangam and light music in the State School Youth Festival Jayachandran met Yesudas in 1958 when he participated in the state youth festival. Yesudas won the Best Classical Singer award and Jayachandran got the best Mridamgist award in the same year.

He has won one National Award, four Kerala State Awards and four Tamil Nadu State Awards. He has recorded songs in Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Hindi languages. Jayachandran is also affectionately called the Bhava Gayakan.

Jayachandran got his first state award in 1972 for the song Neelagiriyude ('Suprabhaatham')... for the film Panitheeratha Veedu. Its music was done by M. S. Viswanathan. The year 1978 brought him another state award. The song was Ragam Sreeragam for the film Bandhanam and the music director was M. B. Sreenivasan. He received a prestigious national award in 1985 for Sivasankara Sarva Saranya Vibho..., a Gurusthuthi song for the film Sree Narayana Guru music by G. Devarajan . The song Prayam Nammil.. from the film Niram brought him a third state award in 1998. In 1975, he sang for the Malayalam movie Penpada (with music by R. K. Shekhar)a song Velli then Kinnam Pol, regarded as the first composition of 9 year old Dileep Shekhar, now known as A. R. Rahman Legendary Music Composer.

Jayachandran has to be mentioned as one of the important person enriched by the music Maestro Ilayaraja. He sang a lots of Tamil hits for him. His famous and ultimate songs are "raasaathi unna" "kaathirundhu kaathirundhu" from Vaidhegi kaathirundhaal, "mayanginen solla thayanginen" from Naaney raaja naaney mandhiri, "vaalkaiye vesham" from Aarilirundhu arubathu varai, "poova eduthu oru" from Amman kovil kizhakaaley, "Thaalaattudhey vaanam" from Kadal Meengal... and much more...

He got the first Asianet award and the Arabian award for the same song in the same year. Its music was done by Sree Vidyasagar. In 1994, he received the Tamil Nadu state Government award for the best singer for the song, Kathazham Kattuvazhi... for the film
KizhakkuCheemayile. A. R. Rahman composed the music. As a recognition for his contribution to Tamil film music, he was honoured with the Kalaimamani award of the Tamil Nadu Government.

Despite his popularity, he was later sidelined by the music composers for reasons not known to the public. He was as important a singer in the 70s and 80s in the Tamil and the Malayalam films as S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and K. J. Yesudas.

Jayachandran was honoured with the Swaralaya Kairali Yesudas award at the beginning of 2001, which he was the first person to receive. The motive behind this award is to choose the best from the singers and lyricists within a span of 30 years. He has sung nearly 1000 songs for Malayalam movies over the years according to the MSI information database.

Jayachandran, for the first time, sang in Hindi in 2008, for the movie ADA...A Way of Life along with Alka Yagnik, music scored by A. R. Rahman.

Trivandrum Lodge, situated in Kochi and its inmates form the backdrop of the film. Abdu (Jayasurya) is a man who does odd jobs for living including being masseur at a spa and being the driver of a wealthy businessman. He is also obsessed about sex, being sex-starved. Shibu Vellayani (Saiju Kurup) is a cinema reporter who works with a not-so-well-known film magazine, and persuades women to sleep with him for roles in films. Kora (P. Balachandran) is a retired clerk from the secretariat who boasts about having had sex with 999 women in his life and who wishes to have a policewoman as his 1000th. Satheeshan (Arun), wants to be an actor. Shibu promises to help him and has even given Satheeshan a new name, Sagar. Arthur Relton (Janardhanan) and Peggy Aunty (Sukumari) are the oldest inmates. Relton teaches piano and lives in the world of music while Peggy Aunty runs a canteen inside the lodge.

The story is about Ramu (Vineeth), a 16-year-old boy who is staying with his annoying uncle, who gets angry and often treats Ramu like a slave. On a trip to the pilgrim town of Guruvayoor with his uncle (played by Thilakan), Ramu meet 15-year-old Gowri (Monisha), who has come with her grandmother. Both find love, and after sharing a few tender talks and moments depart without a clue that they will meet again. When back Ramu runs away from his uncle and lands up in the city with his neighbor namboothiri (played by P Jayachandran). As fate would have it, Ramu and Gowri meet again. Good conduct and intelligence of Ramu gets noticed and he is asked by a lawyer to stay in the house, where Gowri is a maid. The lawyer's deaf and dumb daughter Lakshmi (Saleema) gets attracted to Ramu and the lawyer fixes the marriage without asking Ramu. The triangle love story leads to a sad ending.

Gopinatha Menon (Dileep) a.k.a. Gopi is a young engineer staying alone in a flat in Thiruvananthapuram city. One day he was found dead by hanging. His fiancée Renuka (Jyothirmayi) wants to know the cause of his suicide and decides to do a bit of investigation. She meets different people who had some role in Gopi's life and gets to hear their versions about Gopi. All their testimonials lead to her concluding on what Gopi's reasons were. The ideal attitude that Gopi possess against the odds provides the fuel for Renuka's journey. As Renuka gets more closer to knowing Gopi, the man who led a very normal life posed an even more difficult question as to the cause of his death. Finally she understands that Gopi committed suicide out of the shame of being alive in such a merciless society.

The film opens with a flashback showing the family feud between families of Sathyaprathapan (Mammootty) and Bhavani (Indraja). Sathyaprathapan's sister and Bhavani's cousin are in love. The murder of Bhavani's cousin Vishnu, is wrongly accused on Balagangadharan (Lalu Alex), father of Sathyaprathapan. Sathyaprathapan's sisters commits suicide and Sathyaprathapan turns against his father. He starts to help Bhavani's family and mortgages his own house to finance her factory. A love develops between Sathyaprathapan and Bhavani. But Bhavani's greedy father wants to destroy Sathyaprathapan's family and tries to take their home. That is when Parameshwara Maman shows up, Sathyaprathapan's mom requests Maman to prove Balagangadharan's innocence. Parameshwara Mama and Sathyaprathapan finds Kuruvilla who witnessed the murder being committed by Bhavani's father goons. Meanwhile we see that Sathyaprathapan's mom faints and dies in the hospital. While in the hospital, his mom tells how Balagangadharan had a different wife and he should ask them forgiveness. He storms into Bhavani's house and accuses her dad, also trying to make her understand the truth but she doesn't believe him and stands by her father. Then Sathyaprathapan says he doesn't love her any more and vows that he will never trust a woman by remaining a chronic bachelor forever.

The film begins in a small village in Sri Lanka called Mankulam, where Shyama (Nandita Das) is married to Dileepan (J. D. Chakravarthy), who along with few other Sri Lankan Tamils in the village, is part of the Tamil Tigers rebel association. While having a quiet moment, the couple hears sounds of Sri Lankan army troops approaching. He asks Shyama to leave while he remains in the forest. Shyama realizes that she is pregnant and waits in vain for Dileepan’s return. Her villagers begin fleeing to India to seek refugee due to the war. Shyama is initially stubborn to leave since one of the rebels says that he has seen Dileepan with bullet wounds in the forest, but her relatives convince her to seek refuge for her unborn child's sake. The villagers board a to the shores of Rameswaram. While a local collector takes down the names of the refugees, Shyama gives birth to a baby girl. However, the urge to find her husband and be with her people back home overwhelms Shyama and she leaves behind the newborn girl, hoping that the girl will lead a better life.
