Robert Townsend (born February 6, 1957) is an American actor, comedian, film director, and writer. He is best known for directing the films Hollywood Shuffle, Eddie Murphy Raw, The Meteor Man, and various other films and stand-up specials.

Biography

Townsend was born in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Shirley (née Jenkins) and Ed Townsend; his mother ended up raising him and his 3 siblings as a single parent. Townsend became an actor, comedian, writer, producer, director, and network-programming executive. During a reading of Sophocles' Oedipus Rex at school, Robert captured the attention of Chicago’s X Bag Theatre, The Experimental Black Actors Guild. He launched his comedy career at The Improvisation, a renowned comedy club.

He was married to Cheri Jones from 15 September 1990 to 9 August 2001. Together they have two daughters, Sierra and Skylar (Skye Townsend), both entertainers; and a son, Isiah.

The film begins with an introductory song by Tulie, a bayou dweller, who tells the story of Valdronya and the Mystery Inc. Gang. After solving the mystery of a Cockroach Monster that terrorized a factory, Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby decide to take a much needed vacation. Velma drives everyone to Chauve Sourie Ville, a small town in Louisiana which is hosting a vampire festival called "Vampire Palooza." They meet Lita Rutland, the festival organizer, who explains that tourism is down and the festival is losing money. They also meet their host, Vincent Van Helsing, who runs a vampire museum and is an aspiring author, although his books are not selling. Jesper Poubelle, an anti-vampire agitator, is also stirring up trouble by protesting the festival. Van Helsing takes the Gang back to his museum and shows them various jewelry and a glass-faced casket containing the inert body of Valdronya, a centuries-old vampire.

The film begins with a back story of how black culture's popularity with the American public began to decline in the 1980s, when style and originality began to lose appeal in the public eye due to the persistent efforts of "The Man" (Robert Trumbull), a powerful Caucasian man in control of a secret organization that seeks to undermine the African-American community as well as the cultures of other minorities.
