The Big Show is a 1961 DeLuxe Color and CinemaScope drama directed by James B. Clark, starring Esther Williams and Cliff Robertson. This is the third variation of Jerome Weidman's novel I'll Never Go There Any More. The other two are Broken Lance (1954) a western version starring Spencer Tracy, and House of Strangers (1949) set in the big city starring Edward G. Robinson.
The cast also includes Robert Vaughn, Margia Dean, Nehemiah Persoff and David Nelson, who was best known to audiences of the time for The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet television show.
This was Esther Williams' next-to-last movie, the final one being Magic Fountain (1963) with Fernando Lamas, whom she later married in 1969.
Synopsis
Bruno Everhard (Nehemiah Persoff) is the rigid and uncompromising owner of a German traveling circus. His four sons and daughter all work for the circus, including as performers. Three of the boys, in particular Klaus (Robert Vaughn), resent the favoritism Bruno shows one son, Josef (Cliff Robertson).Actors

En 1897, un homme noir du nom de Kananga, ancien fils d'esclave de Cuba, joue un petit rôle de cannibale dans le modeste cirque Delvaux. Le clown blanc George Foottit, sommé de renouveler ses numéros par le directeur du cirque, a l'idée de s'associer avec Kananga dans un duo de clown blanc autoritaire et de clown noir souffre-douleur, qui prendra le nom de Chocolat. Le duo comique est très bien accueilli par le public et Delvaux commence à faire des affaires. La rumeur du succès se répand en France au point que Joseph Oller, directeur du Nouveau Cirque, convainc Foottit et Chocolat de prendre du service dans son établissement parisien. Le succès dans la capitale est immédiat, et Chocolat devient le premier artiste noir de la scène française. Grisé par l'argent, il s'adonne au jeu et se laisse aller aux plaisirs des femmes.

Partenaires célèbres au trapèze, Hélène et Aldo le sont également à la ville. Aldo, rongé par le remords, avoue à Hélène qu'il a tué accidentellement un homme, Jim Brunot, son ancien partenaire. The movie follows the rise and fall of a con man—a story that begins and ends at a seedy traveling carnival. Fascinated by everything there, including a grotesque geek, Stanton "Stan" Carlisle (Tyrone Power) works with "Mademoiselle Zeena" (Joan Blondell) and her alcoholic husband, Pete (Ian Keith). Once a top-billed act, Zeena and Pete used an ingenious code to make it appear that she had extraordinary mental powers, until her (unspecified) misdeeds drove Pete to drink and reduced them to working in a third-rate outfit. Stanton learns that many people want to buy the code from Zeena for a lot of money but she won't sell; she is saving it as a nest egg. In the mid-19th-century, Lola Montès (Martine Carol) is a famous, past-her-prime dancer and courtesan who has led an eventful and highly scandalous life. (She supposedly holds a world record for number of lovers.) She is now reduced to performing in a New Orleans circus, where an impresario/ringmaster (Peter Ustinov) has both befriended and exploited her by making her the central attraction. In the course of a single circus performance — which dramatically reenacts Lola's life and career — flashbacks reveal, first, her affair with composer Franz Liszt (Will Quadflieg); second, her unhappy youth and marriage to her own mother's boyfriend, Lt. Thomas James (Ivan Desny); and then her scandalous public breakup with conductor Claudio Pirotto (Claude Pinoteau). Along the way, her career as a dancer and "actress" has its ups and downs and she initially rejects the career advances of a younger version of Ustinov's impresario. In a longer flashback, constituting most of the second half of the film, her career as courtesan reaches a peak: her affair with the Bavarian King Ludwig I (Anton Walbrook), which incenses his subjects and leads to his eventual downfall in the March Revolution of 1848. In a final circus sequence, Lola — a "fallen woman" — ascends to the apex of the big top tent for a symbolic, death-defying plunge. She is last seen allowing herself to be touched, or kissed, by a very long queue of male, fee-paying circus patrons.

Charlie Dugan is the "fixer" who keeps Barvin's Greater Shows, a struggling traveling circus, going. He is glad to welcome back lion tamer Aggie Moreno, as her act is a popular one. However, she and top-billed high wire artist Pat O'Connell loathe each other, and that's a feud that Aggie extends to include Pat's 10-year-old daughter Terry. However, when Pat falls to her death during a performance, Dugan persuades Aggie to take charge of the orphan girl. After a while, Aggie finds she likes Terry.
