Marcel Ophuls (born November 1, 1927) is a documentary film maker and former actor.
Pendant la période américaine de son père, il fut G.I. et envoyé au Japon. Après avoir assisté de grands noms de la réalisation (Julien Duvivier et son père, entre autres), il réalise en 1969 Le Chagrin et la Pitié, un documentaire d'investigation sur l'occupation allemande à Clermont-Ferrand et le régime de Vichy entre 1940 et 1944. Le film est censuré par l'ORTF et n'est diffusé à la télévision qu'après l'arrivée de la gauche au pouvoir en 1981. Le film est nommé aux Oscar dans la catégorie du meilleur film documentaire.
Marcel Ophüls est élu membre de l'Académie des arts de Berlin en 1984.
En janvier 2012, il est nommé commandeur de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Une rétrospective lui est consacrée la même année à la Cinémathèque française.

Biography
Jeune, il fuit l'Allemagne nazie vers la France, puis les États-Unis, où il verra son père, Max Ophüls, humilié par les studios et les producteurs français et américains, ce qui expliquera ses conflits permanents avec le monde du cinéma (ainsi que ses difficultés à trouver des collaborateurs dans le domaine de la production).Pendant la période américaine de son père, il fut G.I. et envoyé au Japon. The final years of the short life of Egon Schiele, the Austrian expressionist painter are chronicled against the backdrop of the final years of the Habsburg rule. The story begins around 1912 as Schiele (Mathieu Carriere) and his mistress and artistic muse Wally (Jane Birkin) are befriended by an obsessed teenage girl (Karina Fallenstein) who has run away to be with Schiele. Subsequently Schiele is imprisoned on the grounds that he has behaved in a sexually improper way towards the young woman. The young woman falsely accuses Schiele and although he denies the charge he is imprisoned. The girl withdraws her accusations but Schiele is requested to leave the area as he has offended the social mores of the conservative society in which he was living. Those offended include his mother (Angelika Hauff) who rails against his lax morals.
