In a jumak (a tavern) on a small pass called Soritjae of Boseong County, South Jeolla Province, during the early 1960s, Dong-ho who is in his 30s, recalls his past as he is listening to a rendition of "pansori" sung by the jumak owner. Dong-ho and his sister were raised by the pansori singer Yu-bong, who treats them sternly and with a strict training regimen in his attempts to make serious artists of them as Yu-bong feels that a truly great pansori artist must suffer. Eventually Dong-ho runs away but his sister stays behind. Some critics have stated that this movie glorifies the father's patriarchal power as he seeks to limit his daughter's sexuality.
In a dilapidated apartment building in post-apocalyptic France, food is in short supply and grain is used as currency. On the ground floor is a butcher's shop, run by the landlord, Clapet (Jean-Claude Dreyfus), who posts job opportunities in the Hard Times paper as means to lure victims to the building, whom he murders and butchers as a cheap source of meat to sell to his tenants.
Amar Kant Varma (Shahrukh Khan) is a Program executive for All India Radio. He is dispatched from New Delhi to cover festivities in Northeast India. On his way there, during a rainy night, Amar stops at Haflong train station to catch Baraks Valley express, as the train runs late, Amar meets a mysterious woman by herself who asks him for a cup of tea. When he returns with the tea, he watches her board the next train with three male passengers. Later, Amar spots the same woman in Silchar. He attempts to talk to her but she says she cannot recall meeting him before. As part of his news reporting assignment, for the occasion of fifty years of Indian Independence, Amar interviews many citizens of Barak Valley, and an extremist leader, who claim that the reason behind human rights violations, and poverty in the region is due to Indian Government, and that the Liberationists do not wish to enter into any dialogue with the government, and further justify their resistance in Utthar Purv.

Fasciné par les musiciens manouches, Max prend des cours de guitare avec l'un d'eux, Miraldo (inspiré et interprété par un des plus grands guitaristes de jazz manouche, Tchavolo Schmitt), qui est un génie de la musique. Entre de nombreux, forts et entraînants moments musicaux (chants, danse, musique...), le jeune garçon tombe peu à peu amoureux de son amie Swing. Mais ses vacances se terminent et sa condition de jeune écolier gadjo (terme rom désignant ceux qui ne sont pas de cette ethnie comme dans Gadjo Dilo) le rattrape.
