Ilona Massey, born Hajmássy, (June 16, 1910 – August 20, 1974) was a Hungarian film, stage and radio performer.

Biography

Ilona Hajmássy débute au cinéma en 1935, sous le nom d'Ilona von Hajmassy, dans deux films autrichiens (le premier est un film musical ; le second a pour vedette Leo Slezak). Puis, ayant émigré aux États-Unis, sous le nom américanisé d'Ilona Massey, elle tourne d'abord à Hollywood deux autres films musicaux, aux côtés de Nelson Eddy, Rosalie (1937) et Balalaika (1939). Par la suite, entre 1941 et 1959 (année où elle se retire définitivement), elle apparaît dans seulement neuf films américains, dont un film d'horreur en 1943, deux ultimes films musicaux en 1946 (année où elle obtient la citoyenneté américaine) et 1947 (un western musical, où elle retrouve une dernière fois Nelson Eddy), un second western en 1948, ainsi que La Pêche au trésor (sorti en 1950), avec les Marx Brothers.

À la télévision, elle apparaît dans onze séries, de 1949 à 1955.

Au théâtre, Ilona Massey joue à Broadway (New York) dans une revue des Ziegfeld Follies, d'avril 1943 à juin 1944.

Jeffrey Evans (Walter Pidgeon), an American ambassador to Mexico, is the sole parent to his teenage daughter, Christine (Jane Powell). She finds fulfillment in managing her father's life and spending time with him. Her father forces her to attend a party where her childhood friend, Stanley Owen (Roddy McDowell), who has just turned sixteen, awaits her. In revenge she gives Stanley one of her father's expensive, brand-new tobacco pipes. Stanley, thinking that this gift was meant to show that he is finally a man, asks Christine to be "his girl", but she insists that she is too busy for that. Yvette Baranga (Helene Stanley), the daughter of the French ambassador, begs Christine if she can attend Jeffrey Evans' upcoming party. Christine agrees, unaware that Yvette has a crush on her father. When they return home, Christine asks her father to permit her to arrange the party, to which he agrees. The next day, Stanley comes to drive her to her errands. Christine apologizes for being rude to Stanley, and says he doesn't have to drive her, but he takes her to speak with Toni Karpathy (Ilona Massey), who agrees to sing at the party. Unbeknownst to Christine, Toni was once a love interest of her father.

After the events of The Wolf Man and Ghost of Frankenstein, a duo of graverobbers break into the Talbot family crypt to rob the grave of Larry Talbot (the "Wolf Man" (Lon Chaney, Jr.)), of valuables buried with him, on the night of a full moon. During the grave robbery, the graverobbers remove the Wolfsbane buried with him and he is awakened from death by the full moon shining down on his uncovered body, and kills one of them. The grandson of Dr. Jack Griffin, the original invisible man, has emigrated to the United States and now runs a print shop in Manhattan under the assumed name of Frank Raymond (Jon Hall). In his shop he is confronted by four armed men who reveal that they know his true identity.
